The cynic in me says that Rolex's master market plan

Jul 23, 2019,17:30 PM

Is to make Rolex watches more "exclusive" by both purposely limiting the supply and also allowing dealers to get fewer pieces per year.

This manufactured scarcity (or you can say unmanufactured goods strategy) will then push most of the "unwashed masses" to buy Tudor which has virtually every Rolex analog in their catalog: GMT, Divers, Sat-Diver (Pelagos), Chronographs, Explorer 1/2 (Ranger Heritage/North Flag), Everyday watch with Date (1926/Glamour).

Joe Schmo (Dentist from Hoboken): I'd like to see a GMT-Master II, please.
AD: Your name isn't Roger Federer?  Here's a Black Bay GMT for you instead.

Bob Job (who saved up a year's earnings): I want to buy a Submariner.
AD: You're not Tiger Woods.  We have a nice Black Bay Blue available.

A disturbing thought

I was thinking about the current situation: - on one side, we see a shortage of steel Rolex in the shop windows - it really looks like production numbers are artificially limited - on the other side the Tudor machine is running at apparent full steam Coul...

Don’t think production is limited.

But resellers got all the stock.

My kind of train. [nt]

This is a kind of chicken and egg scenario, but I believe that a big component of the current high demand comes from the resellers

While "we" continue paying the premium, the situation can only be worse and worse for the final customers. Manufacturers and ADs are playing the game as well, so I don't foresee any improvement for us soon.

I don't have so many, but don't have so many watches either 😅

And only one Rolex which is actually my wife's. Hope to have my own first one soon.

Not only time 😜 [nt]

I am 100% happy with Patek & Rolex

Okay, okay... A good friend bought me just Tudor 58 as a present and I will get it next week. He probably thinks I should go diving again, But Tudor is a Rolex, isn't it? Just like a Skoda is a VW and Audi. Basically same quality but lower brand image. Be...

+1 [nt]

For me Rolex are one of the best quality for price. I’m looking for a nice GMT

I’ve looked at the other competitors and didn’t find any others. Gmt, reliable, good value for the long time, good listed price, bracelet and steel case etc.

"Price" is an interesting subject. Also "Quality" is.

I sometimes find myself confused about huge differences in price but "similar" quality.

Believe me, you are not the only one that gets confused by this!

I feel it is a larger industry challenge to deal with. It will be very interesting to see the next time we have a recession. I don’t know how certain watches sell for their listed prices. I know we all have our own individual taste, and that’s great, it’s...

This is a great point, thinking about the next recession.

I have been consciously deferring purchasing anything until that next cycle hits. It means I may be waiting a few years for my next big purchase(s), but opportunities to get truly "dream" pieces may present themselves. I'd expect the market for some thing...

In my opinion, the demand has not increased really

It's more the "new layer" of dealers between the ADs and the consumers or final users. I do like the role of the resellers when it comes to preowned watches, but not at all with brand new ones.

That is more or less my line of thinking

Maybe the next step will be to have exclusive dual brand dealers with only Rolex and Tudor
