Is it really Rolex's fault?

Blame the hype and increasing demand...

ADs keep the hot models off the shelves for their most loyal and VIP customers. And why wouldn't they? ADs should cater to the customers that has been keeping them in business for so long. Why would they sell it to some Joe Schmoe that will end up flipping the watch because Joe cant turn down a 100% profit? ADs rather sell the hot models to to customers that build a relationship, especially the ones that have been with them before the hype. Most of those loyal/VIP customers see the profit of flipping the Rolex as not worth their time or the money is not that significant.

Dealers would love to be Rolex ADs. Rolex's are guaranteed sales. I rather have my show case empty because of sales than filled with watches I couldn't sell. Or even worst, have an empty show case due to me selling all my non sellable watches to the grey market at wholesales.

Should Rolex increase production? yes and no. Yes if Rolex's production line can handle the workload without sacrificing quality. I rather them not sacrifice quality for quantity. We seen that back in 2014. Rolex increased their production to just over 1 million watches a year and sacrifice some quality. They had to bring that number back down to 900k after they realize their quality took a hit.

Finally blame yourself. Where were you 3 to 5 years ago? before the hype and increase demand? Why didn't you buy the Hulk of Batman when they were sitting on the shelves or when they were selling below msrp in the grey market? Now you want a Rolex after seeing the preowned and grey market price? After seeing the resale value? What changed your mind? Did the increase exclusivity? Did the increase demand? Did the Hype? Did the resale value? You be lying to yourself that none of those matter now that you cant get one. Face it, you started looking at Rolex after the fact and now you are mad because you are late to the party? What makes it worst is that people believe or think that they are entitled to buy Rolex (or anything really) just because they have the money.

If you say you are not a Rolex fan and do not want one, Great, more power to you. I am sure other brands would love your business. But there is no denying that Rolex is hot. It is a brand for both collectors and regulars that can get into. A brand that everyone knows.

That's my two cent as a owner of Rolex, JLC, Omega, and H. Moser. and former owner of Panerai, IWC, and Tag Heuer, Let me know what you think?

7 watches for sale. 54 Blank spots. We all know what’s going on but this just looks sad. ...

That’s terrible.

How is Rolex not embarrassed by this?

well ... what can they do about it ?

 By: Bruno.M1 : July 21st, 2019-06:56
can't blame them everybody is buying them, right?

I’d have put them all on one of the display trays...

...and a large handwritten notice on the front saying” Come on- don’t miss out - last few left” No imagination these salespeople. Regards Kev.

This image sorta looks like a going out of business liquidation to me...

I wonder how long before ADs start shrinking their Rolex floor/case space. It looks silly to have sales people stand around over large empty showcases. Empty cases do not drive foot traffic to a retailer and are wasted "real estate." If Rolex won't keep i...

I can tell you that the displays in Swiss towns look different...

not the really hot models, but for the rest well stocked... Anyhow, who buys a watch at an airport? I never did... Rather build a real relationship with an AD. Just my 2 cents, Dirk

Looks, unfortuantely, too familar.

While I am not a particular fan of Rolex, I understand their significance and the reason for their success and so go into their shops every once in a while and I am always surprised by how many "slots" of watches are empty. This does not happen at any oth...

But I wonder the answer would be ‘reserved for special clients’ - no ?!

I see almost all ‘unobtainable’ Nautilus!

They could...

at least offer a bit more exclusive champagne... Cheers

He means M&C is a bit too common to be used by Patek.

Sadly, for a number of entrants to our hobby, getting to experience such class is fraught with being treated like a bad smell. Surely whichever rung of the ladder you’re on, the experience should be equal, as an incentive to repeat the process? Seems like...

I won't take it personally, even though I'm afraid this post of yours sounds as provocative and uninformed as the majority of your other posts...

So a couple of quick things. As far as Patek goes, for me they can really use any (good) champagne they want. In fact, if you've ever been with any watch brand, you'll also know that the experience they provide to customers goes beyond their choice of cha...

As Boron said...

PP could use a bit better kind of champagne... M&C is the equivalent of Johnny Walker red label I meant it as a joke, which obviously was not well taken or understood. At any rate, a brand that respects itself will always find ways of treating you well, a...

All too familiar here in the Midwest. Perhaps not quite so barren, but many many models out of stock. It's so obvious as to be maddening. But will people stop buying because of this

 By: halgedahl : July 21st, 2019-07:00
strategy? Probably not. Even though there are so many fine alternatives that would confer an even greater air of "exclusivity" on the wearer. Oh, dear…. Were I a dealer, it would be hard to put up with this level of potential , rather than actual sales. H...

LOL...just makes me laugh. So many other great non-"Look-At-Me" watches available.

No disrespect to Rolex fans, but I just couldn't care less about the shortages, wait times, premia, etc.

More reasons I won't be a fan of that "brand." They keep making anyone's choice to disavow, effortless. To each their own.

Years ago it was

nice to go into the Rolex store, look around and try different models on wrist. As far as I have heard nowadays the situation is like that everywhere.

Is it really Rolex's fault?

Great post. The same could be said about the Jubilee bracelet

 By: Brandon Skinner : July 21st, 2019-23:10
5 years ago, ask 100 people what they prefer and I bet you 95 (or more) would take Oyster. Now people walk around so triumphant to have the Jubilee on their wrist and claim it to be just the best thing ever🤦‍♂️

Rolex AD keeps the steel sports models in the vault.

 By: jonrus : July 25th, 2019-20:22
AD said that he cannot display these models in the window or the case, risking a walk in customer buying it within minutes and flipping it. Rolex might get back to them for not knowing the customer that they sell to.

Oh it’s well past sad… it’s utterly pathetic!

 By: Boron : July 21st, 2019-16:52
Whilst this lies empty, Rolex found no problem ensuring the recent launch of the new revamped Rolex store run by Bucherer wasn’t as bereft of pieces, and likewise Lunn’s new fit-out to tie-in with the Open in Northern Ireland .
