First, a word of caution

It always makes me shudder whenever anyone describes a watch - any watch - as “inexpensive” without categorically stating what they mean is “relatively inexpensive” compared to other pieces. Always remember that what someone deems as expensive or inexpensive is a personal and relative concept. There are many people on this forum who are not in a position to drop $40K or more on a pre-owned RM 016 and so to them this watch is anything other than “inexpensive”. You’re not the first to do this, but I wish people wouldn’t. The RM 016 is the least expensive pre-owned Richard Mille, as you first said, let’s leave it at that.

Now to answer your question, why is that? I think the classic tonneau RMs retain the highest value while the round and rectangular pieces fair less. Many people who buy an RM do so for the prestige they perceive it affords them and so they go for the most obvious and desirable pieces (think RM 011, 035, 055) and thus these have the highest resell value. From my knowledge, they is no mechanical or technical reason to not look at an RM 016. The biggest downside of the piece may be the very argument you stated - it is the least expensive RM and some may view that as a detractor and not prestigious enough (again, a personal and relative concept).

Best,

NickO

RM016 desirability and issues

I have been looking at used RM016 and am wondering why exactly are these the most inexpensive RM’s on the used market and why they don’t hold their value? By all accounts it looks like any other very nice RM so why is this particular reference so inexpens...

I guess squared watches aren’t that popular among collectors.

But with RM its a bit different as there round watches (RM 32/33/28 etc) aren’t popular as well imho . Not a RM owner so maybe a RM collector has got a better explanation !

I own an RM016

 By: PPJames : December 27th, 2019-05:01
I purchased it for several reasons. Over the past 3-5 years I have noticed that the secondary prices of RM's have risen significantly (including the 016). I had several watches I was NOT wearing, so I sold them and put the funds into an RM016 which I now ...
