Finally, entry into RM

After many years of lusting, I was finally able to get into Richard Mille.

Many years ago, I was enticed by Richard Mille. During a trip to Las Vegas I had the chance to try on a red 35-02 at the boutique. I instantly understood the appeal. It was cool, it was comfortable, all that good stuff that has been repeated before, but now, I knew first hand. This was back when I was even offered a RM11 at MSRP. These were both well beyond my price comfort level, I had to decline. Shortly thereafter, secondary prices went through the moon, and my business was no longer of any interest to any boutiques.

After several years of continuing to lust after these mechanical marvels, and expanding my collection of other brands, I had an introduction with a boutique for an RM 30-01, however, it was only a lukewarm appeal. The watch was cool, but terribly thick. I thought the 72 was fantastic, but was told, An RM 72 just isn't a first RM, and my choices are the 30 or... With disappointment, I declined the 30.

Nonetheless, I told myself that I still wanted an RM, but it had to be one that I was thrilled about, and I wasn't interested in playing games. With more soul searching and homework, the conclusion was that an RM005 in titanium was the one that was right for me.

Such an early model for the brand, the 005 is small by contemporary RM standards, and is incredibly wearable. The watch has a small footprint and is reasonably thin at 12mm or so. And the big appeal was the 100m of water resistance, it can really be a daily wearer, even a vacation piece. The model boasts RM's first automatic movement, and the first appearance of the variable weight rotor.

I was able to track down this particular example in titanium, which, I tell myself, is less common than the gold versions, and had been recently factory serviced. All in all, I am thrilled, and so happy to have found what may end up being my new daily. Thanks for reading.
