碓氷峠見晴台 (Usui Pass Observation Platform)

"The pass on the ancient Tōsandō highway was described as early as the 8th century, in the Nihon Shoki, as Yamato Takeru went through the pass during his journey in eastern Japan. Later, the Nakasendō [see below], one of the five routes of the Edo period maintained by the Tokugawa shogunate (and one of the two that connected Edo, modern-day Tokyo, to Kyoto) followed the route through the pass." — Text from Wikipedia

The photo taken with Nikon F3P, AI-S 50mm f/1.2, Lee Seven5 ND Grad filter, tripod, and Fuji Neopan 100... post processing using Canon DPP (Digital Photo Professional).  There is a road to the observation point, but I hiked up from Karuizawa - about 45 minutes... one has to take care as the area is known for numerous bear sightings...

中山道 (The Nakasendō, Central Mountain Route) has 69 stations and runs a total of 534 km (332 miles).  The starting location is Nihonbashi (Chūō-ku, Tokyo), ending in Sanjō Ōhashi (Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto).  The 18 Station is Karuisawa-shuku (Karuizawa, Kitasaku District, Nagano Prefecture).

Karuisawa-shuku - print by Hiroshige
Public Domain (circa 1835-1837)

歌川 広重 (Utagawa Hiroshige 1797–1858) is considered to be the last great master ukiyo-e artist.

Thanks for looking,
Casey

was done (as mentioned) by ukiyo-e painter and printmaker 葛飾 北斎 (Katsushika Hokusai 1760 – 1849), known as Hokusai. The print is often considered the most recognizable work of Japanese art in the world and is one of the woodblock print series "Thirty-Six ...
