it might be the crop that invokes the reaction. IMO with the arrow, the context is missing while with the boats the viewer might have the sense that less is more. I agree that the first might be viewed with a taste of clinical detachment. . Casey

...but the boat image is great! Most photographers (even the professionals) don't take the time to crop a standard image. It can make a big difference. It is a very nice photo... : )

I crop almost all of my photos... sometimes to the same ratio as the original (800:533), but I tend toward a panoramic crop such as 800:267... social media cover photo is about 800:295. Somehow I get-it that street photographers don't want to crop, but no... 

I agree that ‘street’ photographers...

It use to be the center for motorcycle accessories and is well known for excellent うなぎ (eel) restaurants... just as important there are a number of watch parts / repair / supply shops in the area... The boat photo was taken in 井の頭公園 (Inokashira Park) near...
