These shore excursions only went ahead if the crew assessed that the landing site and general area were passable and free of polar bears. It happens that on this trip, this was the only time we got to land, because the snow was still too deep at all the other potential sites. Indeed, long hikes in this environment would be quite tough for ordinary people, but with a carefully selected site, big coats and muck boots, and professional guidance, it was possible for even the older folks on the cruise to come ashore. And of course, everyone out there knew that they weren't signing up for a caribbean cruise 😉
