My "big box" shopping area is a short 30 minute walk along the river... Tokyo's a bit like LA in that the city is made up of communities... One doesn't have to venture far afield and we are fortunate enough to be near a large park and great restaurants......

Thanks Nico...

Lots of visitors in Japan at the moment for the Rugby World Cup... pool stage and the Brave Blossoms have three wins... trying to make the final eight... big match against Scotland on Sunday... fingers crossed. Casey

Only once

I’ve only been once to Tokyo and that was an odd 25 years ago. But I recall I saw some of the communities just like you described them. The other thing I recall was that at that time as a foreigner (without Google Maps mind you) it was virtually impossibl...

There were no mobile phones when I arrived...

The standard approach was to fix the meeting point and time the day before... planning ahead, a different approach from today ; ) The 'foreign' community was quite small and we know everyone. We all carried maps and the first few years I just count statio...

I moved to Tokyo in 1987 and retired a few years ago ; )

One of the first cameras I ever remember holding was a "Brownie" box camera... I wasn't there for the release in Feb-1900 ; ) My first mobile phone in Japan was the type "PHS" (1997–2003) a full ten years after I arrived... Casey

I know, I just have to visit Japan...best way would be...

to find an appropriate scientific meeting in my field.... what is that little shop in the corner where people are standing on the line??....

Yes, look for a seminar to attend ; )

That little shop always has a long queue... it's a take-out beef lunch box shop... in addition there was a tax hike on 1-Oct. Food eaten in is taxed at 10%, while take out food is only at 8%... when it comes to lunch even 10 yen / day makes a difference 5...

We have autumn weather at the moment...

it cycles in a 3-4 day pattern... yesterday was 30°C and sunny, today is overcast and low 20s... The second from last photo was a b&w conversion using SilkyPix. All photos taken with the Fuji x100t. Thank you for the comment. Typhoon №19 (the stronges...

I have visited that area 1000s of times...

But never took many photos in the shopping area. Having lunch near Roppongi tomorrow, haven't been there in 15-20 years... maybe I take a camera ; ) Thanks for the comment. Casey

Roppongi isn't my favorite area...

 By: mdg : October 7th, 2019-18:11
...but I spent a lot of time around that area, and lived 15 minutes (walk) away... Tsutaya Starbucks is a god people-watching spot if you get tired feet : )

For eight years I worked in/near Ark Hills

Roppongi was not a favorite area, thus the 15-20 year gap ; ) The Cavern Club wasn't bad and I was a member at the Serina Club... in '87 it was an OK area. In later years a friend managed a bar in Roppongi... the stories he could tell... I have a few favo...

I will be in Karuizawa, Nagano on 14-Dec and will be in Aomori or Hokkaido in Dec or Jan... still planning on my side. Casey

I was thinking either Kichijoji or Futako Tamagawa.....

 By: japandeals : October 18th, 2019-23:25
What do you think of the Kichijoji redevelopment? Im not fully on board as I don't think you need 5 or 6 giant department stores and the associated food courts having all similar items (albeit all super tasting and well presented) and reducing the old sko...

It depends on who you are and what you are looking for in a (business) center. A parallel might be hot spring areas... some like the traditional inns and recently there have been what I call "pseudo" renovations, just covering the old but no depth of qual...

Correction: Japan plays Sunday night (tomorrow local time)

Today it was England 40 over Australia 16 and it looks like New Zealand will over power Ireland in the night game (still in progress at the moment).
