In November I always take a photo of this ginkgo tree...

located at the entrance to 妙寿寺 (Myōjuji Temple) in Tokyo.

The ginkgo tree is an object of veneration, a symbol of unity, of changelessness... the bearer of hope and as a reminder of the distant past... a symbol of love.

The ginkgo is a very old tree of the Ginkgoales species. A million years ago, this variety of tree began to die out, leaving behind only a handful of shoots in northern Asia. It is believed to have first appeared in Japan around 1,000 years ago and is now an integral part of the Japanese landscape.

Among the ginkgo trees that populate Japan and planted nearly 1,000 years ago, three trees in particular are distinguished by their age:

※ Horyo Ginkgo (Aomori prefecture)
※ The Grand Kikubo (Aomori prefecture)
※ Shoboji Temple ginkgo (Saitama prefecture)

My own special ginkgo tree...

Thanks for looking,
Casey

Not just a tree

 By: Jurry : December 3rd, 2019-07:34
It’s more than a tree. The story and history behind it, the spiritual meaning of it or the spiritual emotions it can generate. Almost too much to capture in a photograph yet if I look at the last two pictures and recall the background, I can almost feel i...

Thanks Casey. Such reverence comes naturally when you stand before a Gingko tree. My memorable Gingko stands at the courtyard of the Nishi Hongwanji temple in Kyoto.

Is t this Great how through this forum we all get to see and learn so much from other parts of the world? Things we would never read in a book or learn from a tour guide But things we can only learn from people who actually live in that place

How can something so old still be alive? Never mind how beautiful this tree is. Your second photo is sublime. Trunk and leaves in and out of focus. This is what I try to capture, with little success, every time I photograph nature.

These trees have an origin that predates the dinosaurs.

According to Wikipedia... ginkgoales has a Temporal range of 270-0 Ma (mega-annum - a million years), starting in the Permian geologic period, which predates the Triassic and Jurassic periods... fascinating...
