No rules in photography... what ever works. At night I carry a little flashlight with a bit of red plastic over the bulb so I don't completely destroy my night vision YMMV... Casey

Moon focus

Although it seems easy to focus a camera on the moon in reality it’s difficult. You would think that setting the lens at indefinite would automatically assure the moon is in focus. In reality it’s not. After trying out different methods I recently reverte...

Good shot !

Exactly right, infinity position is not really infinity

You got the right trick for getting it correctly. Actually the same trick is to be used for shooting a starry sky in the night as focusing isn’t possible in the night of course 😉. I used the same trick for shooting these... ...

I had bought a decent tripod and hadn’t realized that the difference between a proper and a very cheap tripod can make. Must say makes live easier

I use a Gitzo but there are many good brands. Investment is minimal for a good one but really worth the small financial effort

Ha minimal??

A decent Gitzo carbon for travel plus ball head plus a gimbal and you’re out a thousand bucks if not more. I reckon for many, that’s more than pocket change especially nowadays. But yes I fully agree, such a Gitzo is worth every dollar spent.

Spectacular, Mike. [nt]

Your shot here is really good-nice detail. We have a full moon coming up on Hallowe'en. Very exciting.

In my experience... it depends

Optical infinity is the spot on the focus ring at which a very distant subject, such as the moon, is at its best focus. The hard stop is the place at which the focus ring will turn no further... for some lenses the hard stop and optical infinity are achie...

Thanks for editing coz uploading the photo went kind of strange. At first I thought it wasn’t there but then it was You are spot on with your remark that this phenomena of “focus ring stop not coinciding with focus at infinity” does not always apply. For ...

In early flying days all cockpit instruments were lit with red lights to preserve night vision Never thought about it but will order one great suggestion

Much appreciated

I got it of a YouTube video and it sounded logical enough to try it out.
