artistic from the realistic for me. I don't mind anything on photographs but a lot of art pieces represent themselves as actual photos taken in the moment a realistic photo (can we call them Franken photos? super retouched and then the photographer never mentions the retouches). That's the only thing that really irks me in the hobby.
There are a lot of amazing artworks out there (from photographs) but very few have that authenticity anymore and we usually just assume with our eyes that everything is ok (at least here in my city its taboo to ask if the photographer edited the artwork but its coming to a point where I can spot it fairly easily biggrin).
I never minded cropping (in fact for watches it is almost a must) we are limited to what and how we can achieve a shot its the moment that counts and if you don't have that lens that can reach as far or want to convey a different mood than the current established then its one of those ways to go, although with a slight loss of megapixels. Like a lot of things in life we go from one extreme (super realistic) to another (super edited) in societal trends, I think we have the same vision for our photos that as long as we enjoy them and derive that pleasure then who cares smile I've considered having the hobby as a part time job but one part of me is afraid to try it, exactly because that enjoyability could fade away.

That photo was taken with a Nikon F3, an AI 50mm F1.2 S, and most likely Fuji Pro 400 (color negative film) as I was using a lot of that eight years ago. Casey

Thank you!

Very well put. If I may, I would like to add a couple of points... Before making a shot, I try to determine if the subject and the subsequent picture will stand on its own merits. Will the picture appeal to an objective audience or are there subjective el...

You raised some good points, I am fairly confident that the discussions about quality and beauty will continue for some time to come. I kind of enjoy that (in photography) there is always just a little bit more ; ) Casey

One of the view times I have experienced an expressway service area with such a view... normally all there is to see is the parking lot surrounded by sound barriers ; ) With a friend, I was heading down to Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture (a well known pottery ...

I started with a Mamiya 645. So I'm used to trying to get it right in camera. I bought a digital camera and a mac but I have not used the mac for photo processing - ever! I'm still thinking of getting a digital camera with some filters and just using that...

I like that Idea.

 By: claes_t : December 5th, 2018-11:47
A good first step might be to tape over the screen to avoid too much sneak peaking 😄

Thanks for the comment 'socabaptist', it was a beautiful day...

 By: cshimokita : December 5th, 2018-16:51
Yes, good way to start up... also gives you a chance to see what you like and how you want to present your photos. If you do landscapes then a PL filter might be one way to start. Many digital cameras also have film emulations that you can experiment with...

Photography is about a way to reveal the essence of the subject. The image is " is the sole purpose of photography ". And Post processing is the way to turn an average photo into something special. Interesting topic!

That second line came off an Adobe advert...

 By: cshimokita : December 8th, 2018-13:36
I never really bought into the concept that post processing is the be-all-to-end-all, but it certainly can enhance in the right hands. I use it mostly for correction such as straightening, cloning, WB correction, cropping, and curves. Not all photos make ...

This sums it up perfectly, when I started to get into photography I observed a lot has changed, the post processing ruins it for me (although I do like to edit occasionally as it can be fun)

 By: Rogi : December 8th, 2018-15:28
lots of people spend more time post processing and not enough time actually enjoying taking the photo Thanks for affirming that there are still a lot of people who like the natural photograph one shot, once click approach hehe

Rogi: Even as a job, with the required tension, it should be enjoyable...

 By: cshimokita : December 8th, 2018-16:01
I took a course some years ago and at that time it was all the rage to use only 'natural light' and print / post "as is", particularly using the entire frame (no cropping). I never bought into that either ; ) Photography is wide open... Casey
