Not that I consider myself one, I just enjoy taking photos as a hobby and am under no pressure to deliver - the result is not the priority but the experience is. Whether they are holiday snaps, landscape, street or portraits, I like to immortalise that scene if I find something that interest me. I’m so not like a photographer in the real sense of the word as I don’t follow the rules and am totally self taught. Also my post processing skills are very basic and I just use the photo app. on my iMac for convenience now.
A couple of days ago, I gave myself an assignment to do some portraits in the city streets. I wanted to add a bit of life to just a normal street scene, which in my city is forever changing and fast. Unlike a professional photographer, I didn’t bring any extras like an assistant, tripod, fill lights, reflectors etc. Just two cameras, already an exception as I always believe one is enough and a small bottle of water which proved to be excess baggage in the end as I never touched it.
But I had the privilege to do a late afternoon shoot with a model who also happens to be a photographer. What a bonus! I was a bit apprehensive initially as I’m sure she will notice my short comings during the shoot, so I made it clear to her before we started that I’m an amateur looking for some guidance. She was very accommodating and a real pleasure to work with.
Needless to say, it was a really fun shoot and although some of the shots with the rangefinder was OOF I was reassured and that this also happens with her. I could have done so many things better in hindsight, like not forgetting to change settings when moving from light to darker areas but on the whole I couldn’t have asked for a better afternoon spent.
(Anna has kindly given me permission to post the photos here) So here they are for your viewing pleasure.
