Your wording suggests you find it unlikely that I made these pictures myself, but I did.

Just before lockdown occurred, my wife travelled to Europe. Hence, since 8 March I havent seen her. Lockdown rules in this country dictated that I had to stay home most of the time. Since my wife had bought me a camera plus lenses, what better opportunity to experiment with photography.

I tried macro’s of watches, failed miserably.

Then I discovered the birds in our garden. A new world opened up.

I don’t have a really expensive camera (Nikon D7500)

I don’t have huge high end zoom lenses that go to 400-500 mm, but I use a Nikon 300mm f/4 prime; the old model without VR And since I don’t have a gimbal head (3 months ago I had never heard of a gimbal let alone know what it is) on my tripod, all pictures were shot handheld.

What you don’t see in those pictures is hundreds of hours watching all kind of YouTube video’s, and hundreds of pictures that went straight into the bin.

What you also don’t see, but what is one of the reasons for posting these pictures, is the fact that many many members dropped me all kinds of tips, tricks and suggestions. I have tried the vast majority, some worked others didn’t.

But the pictures are the result of the collective effort, support and good spirit of the members of this forum. And thus posting them is also a token of gratitude.

So yes Patrick, I made them myself with input from the forum.

If I post a picture I didn’t make myself, I have always and will always add the credit, even if unknown.

Birds

 By: Jurry : July 5th, 2020-09:30
After my last post with some bird pictures, I’ve been out practicing and experimenting a lot. Played with all kinds of camera settings and tried the evening golden hour. Plus I think I watched 100 YouTube movies withy tips and tricks. Did all that lead to...

Thanks

It’s a good thing we’re not shooting film anymore because for every good photo I had 25 bad ones haha

Thanks Bobbe

Every time I zoom in on that photo of that heron I feel it looks like one of those dinosaurs creepy actually

Well, considering you were trying to photograph that flying fish...

...and a heron got in the way, you’ve been very lucky. Seriously, a great set of photos. Well done. Regards. Kev.

Thanks Kev

That’s a nice way of putting it: trying to get the fish but the heron got in the way haha

I would say, top notch results...

Two very different shooting situations with the Giant Heron & Common Myna I particularly like the background and rendering of the Giant Heron and such good eye and feather detail, did I mention the background Distribution of the Common Myna Acridotheres t...

There two things that initially I simply couldn’t get right: focus and exposure Whatever setting I tried, photos of birds flying were always blurry until someone stated the obvious and suggested to check the settings. Turned out I had command and sub comm...

Thanks for the follow-up comments...

I guess both points somehow relate to getting to know & understand the equipment. It's somewhat "easier" with old film cameras as there are few functions and no menus ; ) Great that you stuck with it regarding the one genre... You're the go to guy for bir...

Equipment indeed

 By: Jurry : July 6th, 2020-02:55
Most of the difficulties I had were indeed equipment related. It took me a while to master all different exposure and focus options (and my gut tells me I’m not done yet haha). But by the same token, it has been a great discovery journey. Not only did I d...

Beautiful bird and shots. Love the shots with the colorful clouds.

Not happy

 By: Jurry : July 5th, 2020-23:36
The bird it self doesn’t look like a happy camper. By the look in his eyes he is probably thinking: get out of here haha. Razor sharp pic though

Thanks Fernando

I must admit, a few were just lucky shots but on others I followed the book on how to get them on film. Planning, patience and then shoot as many and as fast as your camera allows (mine does 8/second and max buffer is 100 in high resolution) Then go home ...

Purperreiger

 By: George Gently : July 6th, 2020-01:21
Impressive pics, Jurry, of what seems to be a purperreiger. I"m still amazed by the fact, that there are so many waterbirds in a country like where you are living. Regards, George

You made these photographs??

It's not easy to photograph birds in flight! Good job to you or whoever the photographer is!

I assumed that the photos were yours, but then I realized I was making an assumption! So that's why I just wanted to clarify! Superb photos! I don't think I could catch a bird in flight like that. You must have a natural talent. I have a D700 Nikon, I hav...

Much appreciated.

You've become a master at this, Jurry.

That or you're paying these birds a lot of money to freeze in mid-air. Some shots are stunning.
