What does it mean to have "315 points of phase-detection AF"?

Apr 21, 2019,15:19 PM

I presume that it's better than having 300 but not better than 400 points, and better than out-of-phase, or no-phase detection. But does the scale of point counts go from 1 to infinity? The spec doesn't say.

Does it mean the camera will focus on a fast-moving target?

Or on something that's fluttering in the wind

Or on multiple points simultaneously?

Or in the dark?

Or on a diffused, soft target?

Am I in over my head? Or can I just "trust the camera" to do the thinking for me while I continue to practice?

Mike

PS - one source I read said "The topic of autofocus can get quite complex. Understanding it fully requires a depth of technological understanding that most photographers (myself included) don’t have. This article is a simplification of the basic principles. It should help you understand how different autofocus systems work, and what the pros and cons of each type are. If you have any more questions ... uh, umm."

Point of focus... a simple case study

Point of focus really defines the plane of focus... For the most part with a dSLR my standard procedure is to specify the central point as a single-point-of-focus and then use focus lock via a back button... when I recompose there is the potential of an O...

Simple answer would be that more autofocus points equals in less risk losing focus while tracking moving targets.

For notice: the size of the sensor is also important, which means an APS-C with 500 AF points is more capable in focusing than medium format with the same amount because of a different amount of coverage that the sensor surface gets. Other than that autof...
