February 2016 road trip to 清里 (Kiyosato)

 By: cshimokita : June 1st, 2020-00:47
Two views of 富士山 (Mount Fuji) as seen from Yamanashi Prefecture. About two hours door-to-door from central Tokyo, Kiyosato is considered to be a highland resort area... our hotel was located at about 1,400 meters. Both photos using a Manfrotto 190CX Pro4 ...

Thank you Nico...

I use to work for a company based in Switzerland...

I must have flown into Zurich 3-4 times before the weather was clear enough to see the mountains. I was blown away. I was fortunate enough to visit many times. Beautiful. Casey

We have the Matterhorn, and you have the Mt Fuji ;)

I went to Japan in 2005 on a business trip. I took the chance to visit Tokyo and Kyoto. I enjoyed it a lot and only have good memories about that trip. Kind regards Fabio

On one trip I was lodging in Zermatt...

it was a tour of the country with my then (Swiss) boss... We stayed at a little inn with a pub on the first floor and one off views of the Matterhorn. During our visit there was a huge landslide that closed off the valley and buried the train tracks so th...

Probably the first but not the last time meeting in Tokyo.

I can't wait to visit Japan again. I agree with Nico, the first pic. is frame worthy, to be enlarged and placed prominently as a centre piece in the living room. I only just started photography when I met you. How fortunate was I to have met a master at t...

I remember our conversation at that coffee shop in Ginza like it was yesterday...

I guess if you live long enough you end up taking one or two lucky photos ; ) Looking forward to our next meeting. Casey

When I see this photo I think of the moments standing on the balcony just soaking in the view... just a 'perfect' time of the morning. Casey

Both excellent photos

But I like the second one best. Nice detail and contrast on the first mountain range while preserving the range in the mist and the clouds on the horizon. Wonderful photo.

You can see the difference between 100mm (color) and 50mm (b&w)...

Both photos from the same exact location. I have since picked up a Nikon AI-s 105mm f/2.8 Micro... I would love to shoot some Neopan or Tri-X from that same balcony. Casey

Both nice.

The first, with the 100mm lens is my favorite.

That particular EF 100 macro has become a faorite walk around lens...

good reach, always seems to nail the auto-focus, and light enough to walk with all day. Thanks for the comment... Casey

+1 ... in that series the color takes the honor...

also prefer the longer focal length of the color photo. Casey

At the moment most of my enlargement prints are b&w… most from Hokkaido / Tōhoku with a couple from Chūbu… worth thinking about framing that first one ; ) Casey

Let us see

Curiosity

 By: Jurry : June 4th, 2020-06:26
Out curiosity but what made you decide to select 1/10 shutter speed on the first one? Why not slightly faster shutter and bit lower ISO?

Re: color photo at 1/10 sec, f/5.6 and ISO 400

 By: cshimokita : June 4th, 2020-11:58
Given the early morning and soft light, I could have followed the hand held rule of thumb of 1/100 sec when using 100 mm lens thus giving me a possible (and equivalent) exposure of 1/125 sec, f/2.8 and ISO 1600. However, I understand that the native ISO f...

Thanks for your interpretation...

If I was to go back to Kiyosato I might be tempted to take along the Nikon AI-s 105mm f/2.8 Micro. Certainly for my next photo shoot / road trip I will pack the longer lens. The 50 gives me more or less what I saw that morning vs. the artistic advantage o...

Yeah don’t really like doing that but I was really curious about that corner.

It’s very hard to balance the strong contrasts with the subtle changes. At least for me.

A location were I have captured

similar tones but less well known mountains is 碓氷峠見晴台 (Usui Pass Observation Overlook) about one hour hike from Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture. I have only done sunsets from that location and hope to get back in the near future. The last two visits we had b...
