Kodak TRI-X 400...

Over the years I have read about this b&w negative film... in some circles it has attained a reputation of mystical levels. So, what's all the shouting about... Since I like to shop local, for many (many) years I have been shooting Fujifilm Neopan... ...

the first and third shot best. The images are indeed very clean and contrast rich. Thanks for taking the time to examine this Kodak roll here . Cheers, Filip

Thanks Filip...

I also did a test series with Tri-X and b&w color filters (UV, PL, R1, YA2, Y2, ND, and P01) I may post in total or partially. I have not use a green filter (P01) very much, but I was impressed with the results when shooting foliage. With the red (R1) I n...

At the moment I am shooting very little color film... mainly because my favorite (Kodak Gold 200) is not available in Japan... and I like working with b&w images. Casey

Thanks Casey... beautiful shots.... interesting #3 ...

... wondering whats the cause of the light casting on the lamp post and side of the building? BTW, what scanner did you use? I have difficulties with scanning B&W using colour scanner despite dedicated setting for B&W. There seems to be deep/dark sepia co...

If you are referring to the house in photo four the highlight areas are from the sun filtering through the woods. That's snow on the roof and driveway (foreground). Even at mid day there is no direct sun, except for what filters through the trees with an ...

Those are great pictures Casey

Your 2nd and 5th pictures show why a dedicated b&w system, be it film or digital, is richer than just turning a colour sensor into b&w mode. I look forward to some landscape photos with those filters of yours.

Thank you BCL...

One of my good buddies shoots with the Leica Monochrom and loves it... I have seen the results and it's very good... of course my bud is also a rather "decent" photographer ; ). If I convert to b&w from my Fuji X100t I use "RAW file converter EX. 02 power...

The black to white range of this film is very impressive.

The detail is even more impressive when seen large... not only the blacks, but the whites have a lot of gradation. TRI-X is on the short list... I want to try some Ilford Delta 100 or Kentmere, Agfa, Rollei, Arista, Foma... for example ; ) Casey

I'm surprised you didn't mention grain....

 By: Blansky : March 4th, 2019-07:13
As someone who used Tri-x and HP4 and HP5 for many years shooting portraits and enlarging them to 20x24 and 24x30, grain was the deciding factor in using these films and actually any black and white film. Noise is not the same as grain and never will be. ...

On average I print one enlargement per year...

at the year end review I pick my 10 fav images and then print one at 20x30cm... usually a landscape. At that size I have had no issue with Fuji Neopan. In post at 100% with 69MB TIF files you can see the difference but real life (in my case) it has not be...

unless you have a large light area in the print. In portraits, skin is the best place to see the incredible seductive grain on full display. ...

Lovely portraits...

In the context of grain was just discussing with a friend about digital vs. wet... have we come to an endgame with printing or do we struggle with the "difference" yet again. I have not done wet printing for years, but (correct or not) I carry a memory fr...

then around 2005 I moved to digital and spent a lot of time making the print look identical to the analog print. My main concern was the archival qualities of the digital print but it seems that this was achieved by 2005 to my satisfaction. From that poin...

Grain in film photos, pixels in digital files... plus end user expectations combined with improvement and flexibility in digital technology. Casey

A few years back that was the equivalence of Apple vs Samsung and Nikon vs Canon...

 By: Blansky : March 5th, 2019-13:58
I used to hang out at APUG for many years and those discussions were often heated and somewhat crazy at times. Those of us who converted to digital did have to make some changes to duplicate the look. Digital was sharper in an artificial way, I'm talking ...

I love the contrast, good shadow detail and excellent exposure latitude. Some nice grain too. Here's a few recent shots scanned on an Epson V550. I only scan to post on my web site and share on Instagram, I prefer to make gelatin silver prints in the dark...

Great to meet another film shooter and wet printing is icing on the cake ; ) and yes, Tri-X has some dedicated users. I recently received a prepublication notice for a photo book by a friend... I understand that he took something like 40,000 photos (over ...

I appreciate the kind words. I don't find sharing film photos online too bothersome since I scan all of my negatives as digital contact sheets anyway. I'm redoing my darkroom and hope to have it up and running shortly. I enjoy printing almost as much as b...

I am already worried about accommodations for my trip to Aomori in August and need to get cracking on that. I normally travel with b&w film and the Fuji x100t. Kyoto in April will be crowded. Based on my recent tests I would take some Tri-x 400. I hav...
