The Otaru Canal follows the curve of the port as a working waterway to move goods.  Regarding PL12 (Patrol Long or Patrol Large depending on the source) it's a fast response Coast Guard vessel facing North Korea and the Russian Far East... an outpost along a fluid border as it were... and in fact local signage can be seen in Russian.

Thanks for the comments... I have an alternative photo of PL12 with more horizon and less dock... personal choices.  I do agree about the value of looking into photos... it's all about how the viewer might shoot a similar situation... these memory bookmarks can be very useful - in this case asymmetric composition and how far to push it.  By the way I was on one knee to lower the point of view and get more foreground.

Sapporo is familiar ground so I have photographed these exact location 3-4 times previously... and the images tend to become more abstract and contain more detail year-on-year... the value of returning to a location with a slightly different eye.

Sapporo (January 2020)...

I have been there so often it's almost a second home, and in Dec-2014 I took a monthly rental. There aren't many locations that have gone unphotographed. This time it was about the food and a few familiar locations... Day trip to Otaru Otaru Harbor Visit ...

Hi Casey

Thanks for posting some great pictures again. As you know I’m learning/practicing to “read” more into photos. Last few weeks/months I noticed that this exploration is now splitting in two parallel roads first being: “what do I see that sticks out or which...

Thanks Jurry...

Love the black and white and appreciate the aspects of the area that you select and capture. The first photo (Day trip to Otaru) is especially beautiful to my eye, along with Hokkaido Shrine Gate. Are these shot on film, by the way?

Thank you John...

Yes these were shot using film. Over the two weeks I shot a little over 200 frames or about 15 photos per day... more or less average for one of my photo shoots. It was all b&w negative film, Fuji Neopan 100 version 01 and one roll of version 02... I will...

Looking forward ...

to view the comparison of Neopan I & 2. Kong

Three initial thoughts...

lays flatter i.e. less curl, it's more expensive, and it only comes in single packs (not discounted 3-in-a-pack). Casey

Thanks!

More interested to know if there's substantial improvement in shadow details (taking reference for Zone 2 & 3). Kong

absolutely the same question...

Just need to look into the detail after post processing. Casey

This might be relevant ....

I posted this warning to film users on 05-Nov-2019... But it's always good to read a reminder... Thank you Link to original post

You do B&W film beautifully!

I can see why you prefer this format.

Thank you fernando...

My first impressions of the new Neopan 100 () is that it's better than the previous version... and it lays much flatter for scanning... more on that later. I think I am "ready" to work with the Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH after a long break ; ). Problem is...

I was happy to revisit Otaru... recent months I like to go-back-again as my memory is not as good as it use to be and each location is new again ; ) Casey

Yesterday I've seen James May in Japan @ Amazon and he visited Hokkaido. I was quite surprised to see and learn a lot of things about this area. And of Course, this is not a documentary film, it's just Entertainment. stere

I was an occasional viewer of Top Gear...

but not seen any of May's Amazon videos. From a photographic point of view, I enjoyed my time in Hokkaido and particularly in Asahikawa... all the negatives are scanned and I just need to do some processing & organization before posting. Casey

Thanks Nico...

50mm rocks ; ) Thanks for the kind words, I have stood on that same bridge every time I visit Otaru. Only about one hour from Sapporo. Casey
