I remember visiting in the late 1980s ~ early 1990s

I understand that it can be very crowded in recent years, but well worth the trip. Casey

I visited the Badaling location (just outside Beijing)...

in the 2000s, while living in China. Lots and lots of tourists

It is the reconstructed part of the wall, if you look around it makes a full circle which doesn't make sense

Majority of the Great Wall is a bunch of rubble right now. Bonus fact: Forbidden City is actually rebuilt with cement.

I appreciate the wall....

ONLY as an historical event. The wall, from the architectural point of view, means absolutely nothing to me. Some large stones, on top of one another multiplied by 5,000Km

You must be VERY old, Casey

I think I was first there in 1994 (a rare round-eye, as my Chinese co-worker like to call me -- or Long-nose, ha ha), a short time after you visited. ...

I will try to find some photos...

shopping at the Friendship store, using FEC (1980-1994) as foreigners were "not allowed" to use RMB, cars & pollution (except for coal fires) was not a problem, and horses were not uncommon in central Beijing... Long-Nose is a common nickname for foreigne...

I remember visiting in 2001…

It’s YUGE!

But of an understatement.

You’ve picked a prime spot to show the viewer the inmense length of that wall. The way it’s meandering through the landscape is perfect. I once read somewhere that this wall is the only man made object that’s visible with the naked eye from the moon. ...
