Don, this is for you... The でわ (Dewa) is one of three "Aso" class 1,000 ton "Patrol Vessel Large" (PL) ··· of the three (PL41, PL42, & PL43) the PL42 was commissioned on 12-April-2006 and has its home port in Akita (where this photo was taken).

The "Aso" class is named after Mount Aso (Aso Kujū National Park, Kumamoto Prefecture)... the largest active volcano in Japan and one of the largest in the world... which from this week has been letting off steam ; )

The vessel was designated as "高速高機能大型巡視船" (high-speed, high-functionality patrol vessel large) and carries a Bofors 40 mm L/70 autocannon ··· it was designed to intercept spy boats.

In commission: 2005 ~ present
Length: 79 m
Beam: 10 m
Depth: 6 m
Propulsion: 4 × Waterjets (4 × diesel engines)
Speed: 30+ knots
Complement: 30
Armour: Ballistic protection (limited)
01) Succeeded by: Hateruma-class (In commission: 2008 ~ present)
02) Succeeded by: Kunigami-class (In commission: 2012 ~ present)
03) Succeeded by: Iwami-class (In commission: 2013 ~ present)

The Aso-class was succeeded by a series of multi purpose vessels with slower stable operating speeds geared toward rescue and salvage operations.

Even docked it looks like it's ready to spring into action ; ) Two years ago I photographed the おいらせ (Oirase) PM23, a "Tokara" class "Patrol Vessel Medium" (PM) that was berthed in Aomori City... I seem to be a ship-spotting mode... Casey ...

I believe,

I remember that image. The effect of the snow on the surfaces makes it pop with depth even more than it regularly would. Cheers, Filip

The Japan Sea is a challenging location to work... I was a bit surprised that it carried a complement of 30 as it didn't seem that big - shows how much I know about patrol vessels ; ) Casey
