Patek Philippe

an old friend returns

I had just re-purchased a 3970EG that I had sold to a friend a year ago. He was thoughtful enough to give me 1st shot at it and I didn't hesitate to jump on it.

I regretted it the moment I sold it the last time. It's one of those watches that I don't see that often and kicked myself, but I do have ADD when it comes to watches and I do not have unlimited funds so something must go for that new purchase.

This particular watch was made in 1991 and has the 2nd series dial and hand and comes with 2 backs. Another feature on this watch are the large hallmarks. They are on the side of the lugs including the "750" stamp. I have seen this only a couple of times both with the 2nd series 3970's but they were on the rose gold models. I would love to find out more about this case. Was it a different case manufacturer? Did PP ask for the hallmarks to be positioned there and if so why? How many of them were made and during what time period?

One of the joys I get out of collecting watches is the ongoing research of seemingly useless information, but for me it's part of the passion and interest.

My question is, does anyone else have any pictures or know of another white gold 3970 with the 2nd generation dial with the large hallmarks on the side of the lugs. I spoke to another collector on the phone today and he said he saw one that was auctioned off at an AQ auction a couple of years back. I am going to research this, but if anyone else knows of any I would appreciate a response.

I find the 3970's interesting because of the differences and the evolution of the model. I like the idea that Patek, at this time was more adaptable to putting on different dials making some very unique pieces.
