Unpopular opinion: people DO seek respect through watches
Dec 12, 2019,20:56 PM
I see a lot of people replying about how you don't earn respect through material goods. Excuse me?
I'm sorry to hurt everyone's feelings, but that is exactly what we all do when we collect expensive things like watches. You think you're doing it for yourself? Get real. You think you're doing it as an emotionless investment? Get real. You're doing it to meet expectations and build an identity.
Maybe 'respect' isn't the ideal choice of words ('prestige' is better), but we all know what he meant, and to pretend that you're a saint who buys watches only for the love of craftsmanship or something like that is seriously disingenuous.
There is even an evolutionary explanation for why we buy expensive shiny things: mates like them and rivals respect them. Through collecting material goods you prove to society that you're successful, and other people are attracted to success. This elevates your power status in society and increases the likelihood that you and your family will prosper.
Watches increase prestige, and prestige is a central element to survival.
So as to the original question of what to do with the collection, science suggests you should sell them all and upgrade to a seriously prestigious piece. Your genes will thank you!
