The agony of choosing a collecting path (5270)
Apr 20, 2021,12:44 PM
Hello fellow watch crazies, long time listener etc
I seldom post as I never feel I have much to add to the forums, but really do enjoy reading these and other forums, and as I have been struggling with a collecting dilema I thought this might be the best time to share and get feedback from the community.
I started collecting watches about 15 years ago, I am not a very wealthy man but I am fortunate enough to be able to save enough to buy myself a nice watch or two per year, and have successfully obtained many of my grail pieces . The usual process is find out about a watch I must have, set personal goals and save for a while, buy something nice for the wife, and finally get the watch I wanted. During these years I explored many different brands, bought and traded many watches, and found out I am cursed with have a diverse taste for horology of all types almost. I am the type of collector who can delve into the history of Panerai and enjoy a 47MM PAM127 as much as appreciate a fine Calatrava, hence my current predicament.
I, like many, have fallen in love with the 5270P and its glorious salmon dial. The history of the grand complication, the gorgeous case and overall design, the finishing of the movement, its just an object of desire that has occupied my mind since its release. Unfortunately, also like many, I can't justify just buying the watch outright and would have to release quite a few pieces from my collection before I could go through with the purchase.
So I split my collection into two parts, the first are watches that I absolutely can't bring myself to ever part with, I enjoy these immensely and none of them competes with the 5270 in anyway so no redundancy anyway:
So the Nautilus, ALS Double Split, FP Journe Cronometre Optimum, IWC Perpetual Calendar in RG, blue Sky Dweller, LE Speedy, PO, JLC Extreme Lab II, PAM 127 and Cali, AP ROO, and the Oris beater are staying put.
I am adding to those the blue Aquanaut in WG, JLC Duometre chrono in platinum with the platinum dial, and the new Cartier Santos skeleton this year for sure and as has been planned and saved for.
Now for the second part of the collection, these watches are fantastic but I could see myself trading them all in plus a bit of cash for the 5270p (question is, should I?)
All are great watches, but I think I would miss the Patek 5170P. Its such a gorgeous watch, and in fact might be more beutifull than the 5270P in absolute terms, the 5270P would add diversity and that gorgeous salmon dial in addition to entry into the elite Patek perpetual calendar chronograph club. Then again each one of these watches has tremendous history and some are rare LE models such as the green Portugueser and ceramic PAM, even the pilot Heritage and LE Seiko Prospex would be missed dearly, so much diverse and wonderfull history and design would have to be sacrificed.
Then again, that salmon dial\!
And on it goes, my mind ever occupied with the most difficult decision in my modest collecting career and hence my first post in ages, I would very much like to hear the thoughts of fellow collectors especially those who have made the jump to the 5270P.
