Thanks for a nice writeup, that I think describes correctly a very well-known but delicate situation.

I see some exceptions to your argument (e.g., Ellen DeGeneres is quite a sophisticated collector in my view, unlike many -- though not all -- sports people), but I can only agree on the broader point you are making. I think Thierry's long-term strategy is the right one when it comes to Nautilus and Aquanaut, perhaps the only one possible. Yours is also a good argument in favor of Patek's independence, if you think about it -- one of the main reasons why I personally support (and love!) this brand. Cheers.

The Conspiracy theories: Patek Nautilus
By: Miranda : August 9th, 2019-08:27
Myth busting, the pretext is that Patek are deliberately withholding production of the stainless steel sports watches, both Nautilus and now Aquanaut. A recent article on Hoodinkee highlighted that Thierry Stern will not increase his production of steel w...
+1 lol

Time to move on
By: lascases : August 9th, 2019-09:13
The Nautilus (to me) has acquired a negative touch, given all these "new customers". They have not much in common with traditional qualities of Patek. To me vintage Rolex is much more interesting, if you are looking for sports watches. A high-quality Role...
I don't know if Patek is on the right path but future will show.
By: Pour le Mérite : August 9th, 2019-09:20
Thierry says they don't want to become the second Audemars Piguet, yet today all that Patek is known for by most people is... the Nautilus. Okay, you see some hyped discontinued complications too and only here and there a few current complications. Still ...
+1...... Hand finishing?Hmmm

Here is an old photo from a strip down on this site 16 years ago. This is not a pretty sight. I'm assuming the very high end pieces get attention, but the mass market production rates can't allow it. ...
Good commentary!

However, Ellen DeGeneres is a not just a celebrity, but a serious watch nerd with some vintage Rolex. She is one of us! Maybe some of these others are as well. Anyway, that's a very tangential point. I would say we need a similar article on Rolex. Word is...

I remember seeing a white-dialed Nautilus regularly in the display case at Shreve & Co here in San Francisco. Thought about picking it up now and then. It really doesn't seem that long ago. That said, now that the Patek sports line is being taken up b...
I would say
By: chris7509 : August 9th, 2019-10:12
That Patek exept from the collectors and watchs nerds like us was totally unknown to "population" probably 3 or 5 years ago (unlike Rolex). Who would be mad enough to put 10s of K€ in a watch Now with easy money and instagram every one wants to show off w...
Thank you Imran, a nice post.

I am a big fan of Nautilus and I have also collected a bunch of those. But I am very surprised. Nautilus is not the only nice and absolutely well made sporting watch. Let's take VC Overseas as an example: same quality movement, high brand image, perfectly...
True.

And the most clever of us are not always victims of marketing. I do not claim I would be one of the clever ones... Best, Kari

Mr Sterns' position isn't new, he told the same a year ago or so and shared his view on the overall capacity vs each product line in PP. I'm not even sure of the 'high demand' of Nautilus 5711 or 5712 specifically - those are very well (instantly) availab...
Footballers will move on to something else 😊
By: drphileasfogg : August 9th, 2019-15:20
They dropped AP and Hublot so they will drop PP for the next Instagram watch. This Nautilus fashion definitely tarnishes the understated elegance that is the core of PP’s philosophy. I think production should terminated before it is too late.
Steel vs Precious Metals
By: vicunaman1 : August 9th, 2019-16:45
Does anyone have info regarding production/sales of steel vs P, G, R, J. in Nautilus references. The ad refers to The Costliest Steel Watch. I personally believe that the Nautilus was designed to be a steel watch... along with Rolex, and AP sport models. ...
