Strictly speaking, the CHR 27-525 PS draws heavy inspiration from vintage Victorin Piguet rattrapantes

For reference, here's a vintage Patek rattrapante, with a Victorin Piguet movement from a century ago (which is 12 ligne, or ~27mm in diameter):

Next to the modern CHR 27-525 PS as found in the 5950 (which is also 27.3 mm in size):

There are many similarities in the architecture, with notable upgrades being the balance wheel, some subtle revisions of the levers, likely more changes/optimisations under the hood, etc.

I'd argue that the modern Patek CH 29-535 and its variants (as found in the 5170/5270/5370/5204/...) are Patek's true attempt at making their first in-house, manual wind chronograph from scratch. But personally, I still consider the CHR 27-525 PS to be one of the finest finished chronographs/rattrapantes simply due to how incredibly delicate and fine the parts are, all contained within a diminutive 27mm movement.

Regards,
skyeriding

Introduced in 2010, the CHR 27-525 PS movement in this reference is a marvel of engineering being only 5.25 mm in height. This is all the more impressive considering it incorporates spilt seconds functionality. On top of this, it is a monopusher design wi...

My grail watch for many reasons...

...stainless steel, the fantastic case shape and slimness, the very unusual (and difficult to manufacture) complication. Great pix... Maybe one of our esteemed members will chime in with photos of his : )

If one is up for auction...

...it would be interesting to see the hammer price. I need to know how much of my kids' inheritance I will need to spend...

You'd merely be looking after this watch for them, so I think it makes total sense to use their inheritance for it... ;-))

PS: We don't want to go into auction prices here, but I just sent you a bunch of references via PM ;-) Cheers.

I love that.

Don't worry honey...the kids will get it all back in spades as long as I keep buying PP's !

Absolutely magnificent!

Thank's for interesting post with very nice photos.

I've read mixed responses to this watch

But I, for the life of me, cannot understand why. I find it one of Patek's most appealing offerings and truly a grail!

Interesting. What are the quibbles

 By: edtonkin : May 25th, 2022-20:42
with this watch that gives rise to the mixed responses? Im curious. Thank you.

Agree strongly with Miranda. Insane piece

grail alert

hope they will bring back that movement in the regular catalogue. great architecture and top-notch finishing. it's a 1/5th scale dial not matching with its 3hz, which i do find a bit odd. even their 4hz chronos are mostly 1/5th of a second, with very few ...

An absolute grail for me and has been for a decade.

I think your description describe my feelings so closely that I’m not going to add or discuss any of what you said. Thank you immensely for these close ups. I have revisited this post several times tonight to look at the pictures. If I could pick only one...

We are on the same page...

...as much as tourbillons are cool and repeaters are flashy, this one really does it for me. I am a sucker for non-round cases and stainless steel, so you can see why it's at the top of my list : )

Yep. And it think this is the ultimate execution of a modern rattrapante.

The movement is so elegant and clear in its design. No modular design. No clutter. Just reduced ti it’s bare elements. The ultimate sofistication. To me it’s one of the most beautiful watch movements ever.

Superb !

Thank you for these amazing live photos. Have never seen one in real live and doubt I would ever.

One of the great all time watches!

I saw one today at the OAK London exhibition. A class act!

Thanks as usual for a superb presentation of a true "grail" reference --- a word that I don't like to use often, but which is totally appropriate for a steel 5950! :-)

The unique case, along with applied Brequet numerals and black oxidised hands, are the WOW factors. The pattern at the four corners brings it over the top IMO! Enjoy it often !

Merci, I.

Spectacular watch

 By: jmpTT : May 27th, 2022-03:06
Such an exceptional movement, I think this remains easily the most impressive split seconds chronograph movement made today, though Vacheron has a similar movement. This would be a capstone watch to any collection, also one that could be worn and enjoyed....

yum
