Sell my Royal Oak blue dial to buy a 5711

Jan 15, 2020,21:23 PM

I have an AP 15400 Royal Oak stainless blue dial. I am a Patek guy through and through and am on the list at two different ADs for a 5711 but it’s unlikely I’ll ever get “the call.” I’m not In love with my Royal Oak blue dial and would much prefer the 5711 blue dial — besides the Nautilus there is no other acceptable SS sports watch I would be happy wearing. I can realistically sell my Royal Oak for 26k and buy a 5711 blue dial gray market for about 58k - so I’d need to add about 30-32k cash once selling my Royal Oak. I just don’t know if this is worth it. Every time I put on my Royal Oak I just wish it was a 5711 instead! My watchbox is full of Pateks... a 5170, a 5905, and a 5130. I am only missing an appropriate Patek sports watch to complete my Patek collection. I’ve always been opposed to buying gray, this is an exigency circumstance! My cash add over the cost of my Royal Oak would basically be like paying MSRP (30k) for the Nautilus, which helps me justify it as I’ve had the Royal Oak for over five years and have long forgot the money I put into it when bought years ago. Should I just be happy and content with my Royal Oak boutique edition blue dial which for most is a grail piece in and of itself, or should I stretch for a gray market Nautilus...

NO RETURN ! Just pull the trigger then. Await your wrist shot.

Definitely keep the ro! [nt]

Not a trade I would make myself...

That RO is a beauty! It's a bit surprising you feel so different about the two pieces given how similar they are. It may at least be worth waiting a couple of years for the prices to come down and see if your feelings change.

Have you considered getting an Aquanaut?

If you had a 15202 Jumbo, I would’ve said hang on to it but personally I find the wearing experience of the 15400 to be quite different from the 5711 (or the 5167 for that matter) due to the thickness.

Keep the RO

It represents, imo, very well the heritage and the spirit of Gerald Genta. Furthermore, paying 58k a 5711 is just insane... Just my 2 cents

If there s any doubt there is no doubt

Go for it

Remember, RO was the first and Nautilus was the "copy" :)))

It's a question only you can answer as you need to pay additional $30k for a Nautilus. Both are gorgeous. I had a Jumbo before and I've been wearing a blue 5711 since 2017. Tell you the truth, I don't 'need' another watch after I got my 5711. But, I have ...

Or you can say RO was a 'trial run' and Genta refined his design with the Nautilus :-)

As for the OP - I can see both sides of the argument. It's obvious you are a Patek guy, but sometimes it's nice to be different Do not try to approach it logically, just think which one makes you feel better - for me RO lacks finesse and elegance that com...

True also :D (nt)

e

15202 IS the RO.

That's why you don't really like it. Money come, money go, sell the 15400 and buy what you desire.

That's like saying 5711 is THE Nautilus

 By: CastorKrieg : January 16th, 2020-00:28
Whereas spread on the market between 5711 and 5712 is exactly as their MSRPs, thus the market has decided there is no inherent advantage of one over the other. Personally if I was picking a RO I would go for 37mm as well, due to the fact RO has 2mm extra ...

The 15202 is THE Royal Oak

The 15400 is an alternative and when you look at the caseback you realise why.

never ever!

The RO is the REAL ONE! Nautilus is only a me too product. Design is to much 70ies not so timeless like the RO. In this times there is an Incredible hype about the 5711...why? Since people buying this kind of watches as an investment and not because of lo...

Two thoughts here...IMHO... However, you must follow your own path...

For me, myself, there is no way that the PP is TWICE the watch that the AP is, based on the going market prices you mention. Again, to me, to pay that much for a stainless watch, any stainless watch, is absurd to me. Next, and this has been mentioned: The...

I wouldn't at this time...

Too much of the urge today may be driven by the Nautilus craze that has completely overtaken the collecting community and spread across international financial centres. The Nautilus remains the watch to own, if you want to show the world "you've made it",...

I don’t agree on this comment

“My cash add over the cost of my Royal Oak would basically be like paying MSRP (30k) for the Nautilus,” The add over is actually the difference or margin you made from the RO If you paid 20k and sold for 26k then then the 6k is the add over So it’s like y...

Funny how everyone suddenly needs a 5711 now that everyone else does!

 By: pejp : January 16th, 2020-09:42
Sorry to be blunt, but yes the 5711 ha always been somewhat hard to find, but at this point i think many of the buyers just want it because nobody else has it, or they want to flip it. Perhaps you’ve always loved it, but I’ve met so many people who desper...

You should do it

 By: descartes1 : January 16th, 2020-09:51
You’ve made some money on the RO (through appreciation after you bought it), and the 5711 should hold its value given very limited supply barring a major financial crisis (in which case the value of the RO would fall too). Personally, I like the RO better...

Keep it!!!

 By: Chromatic Fugue : January 16th, 2020-10:28
The RO looks great on your wrist and looks great period, full stop. If the 15400 fit me as well as it fits you, I would much rather wear it than a 5711; it's a better-looking watch and has at least an equal pedigree. The RO also is very unlikely to deprec...

Why would 5711 be any different than the RO?

 By: CastorKrieg : January 16th, 2020-10:52
Similar pedigree, similar segment. If anything it’s the RO that will fall more than the Nautilus, AP brand power is not that of PP.

just my view, but

 By: Chromatic Fugue : January 16th, 2020-11:03
The 5711 is the subject of an unprecedented bubble, whereas its close peer, the RO, is not. Ten years ago, the valuations were much closer, and for a reason; they're comparable watches. That said, I obviously might be wrong about future valuations. Just t...

So, it's all about how much they are worth and how desirable they are?

By: India Whiskey Charlie : January 16th, 2020-15:43
Rather than buying the watch that makes you happy? I can't afford either but I'd pick the AP over the PP in a heartbeat.

Obviously you should always buy the watch that makes you happy, BUT

 By: Chromatic Fugue : January 16th, 2020-17:04
not at the very top of the market. No harm in waiting for the bubble to burst.

I wouldnt

If you are gonna spend that amount of money I would recommend go for a classy Patek 5711 is amazing but a royal oak is so so so similar and yet so much cheaper

I will keep my Royal Oak. Thanks guys [nt]
