Seeing the market prices now for all Nautilus ranges I started to think

Aug 12, 2018,12:25 PM

My 5980 could sell in the range of 55 to 60k$
I never ever think of parting with it to be honest but I did pay almost 60% of that as cost when I got it a few years back
Now here’s the tricky situation
The new fp journe rattrapantte Ti brand new is almost the same price
It is a higher complication finely done and great architecture and aesthetics

Let’s say I got crazy and traded for example
In this case it’s like getting the of journe for the original price I paid for my 5980

That is even more value to the money than the Nautilus

Tempting times were in

If and when the opportunity does come it will be a deep thought and decision

The FPJ is a rare watch that you dont see every day . Your 5980 is a beautiful watch too but not as rare as the FPJ imho .

Understandable sentiment but...

.... I would hold the 5980, at least for the moment. Velociphile

Well,

I am playing with the same thoughts, but with my 5711/1A and a Voutilainen Gmr.... Of course I must sacrifice some other watches also from my collection to get the Gmr. One is for sure: both the Journe and the Voutilainen are better finished, more unique ...

A watch dealer once told me his RBII rose to a value where "he could not afford to keep it"

A little ironic as he was an AD, and decided to keep the watch he got for his own collection. But then he said it climbed to a level where he had to sell it. I know nothing about Patek values, but the watch is awesome. You have some other amazing choices ...

that's true

But I think you are going to regret that in the future. An Iconic (complicated) PP and it's discontinued. That's usually a very nice recipe for some promising future. Possibly I am biased, since I am an owner too. But I never see myself selling this piece...

Very fair thoughts, difficult decision to make

You made a good investment with the Nautilus, now you can cash it out or not. Our taste and needs change over time. Which watch would you enjoy the most? That's the key to me. And I would also have a look at the resasle value of the FPJ, just in case you ...

It is a very personal decision to make Muhannad

 By: iadxb : August 12th, 2018-22:51
Depends on what makes you buy and wear a luxury watch. For me, watches are first and foremost objects - beautiful micromechanical machines. As such, for a given price, the watch that is more complicated, better finished, and better looking will always get...

I would go for the FP Journe but.....

 By: Spencer Karrington : August 13th, 2018-06:07
I am VERY biased towards indie brands, especially FP journe. I love the uniqueness of the brand but at the same time, the simplicity and elegance of their watch designs. These qualities make FP journe such a unique watch company and the model you choose i...

That is exactly how I feel!

 By: Spencer Karrington : August 13th, 2018-19:25
I mean, just looking at the production numbers, FP Journe made 659 last year while Patek Philipe makes around 50,000 per year! I know that FP Journe plans to increase their production numbers but still, Patek Philipes make around 71.49 times as much as FP...

I can say the same about AP.

 By: MichaelC : August 14th, 2018-06:45
I bought my first in 2001. Virtually nobody knew or cared what it was. I LOVED that attribute. Now, with social media, LeBron, Kardashians, etc., AP is everywhere. It reduces my desire to have one on. Now, the flip side, I got into AP in the first place b...

I'd sell in a heartbeat and

but a 5070. good luck

I don’t know anything about the FP Journe you mention, but

 By: RussW : August 13th, 2018-10:41
how do you think it’s value will compare to the 5980 in a couple of years?

5980/1A Blue dial is one of my favorite watches.

 By: doublesix : August 13th, 2018-11:50
I would not sell mine if it doubled from here. I like it that much and would miss it. My biggest regret is that I did not buy the 5980 black dial also.

Haha! Same here. Best H [nt]

I would keep the 5980

 By: descartes1 : August 14th, 2018-12:24
I can’t say if it will outpace the journe in appreciation, but it’s a helluva all around watch that’s not too easy to come by anymore.

Thanks for the inputs Descartes and I am keeping my 5980

By: Mohannad (aka Riddler) : August 14th, 2018-12:36
But when I see the market price of it right now I wonder about the “What If” situation

Sell the 5980!

 By: Langeholic : August 14th, 2018-13:26
Fundamentally the nautilus is an entry level Patek, yet it trades on par with far rarer and more desirable complications. Strong indications point to bubble territory, I don’t deny that irrational speculation may continue, but there is more downside risk ...

Tough decision my friend, but having handled the FP Journe some days ago in Geneva, I would say GO for it if ...

... you like it, a true marvel!!! Some pics for you Keep us posted on your final decision Best Luca ...

two thoughts

 By: thomaspp : August 28th, 2018-13:13
1) it is too bad that we all focus on price of the watches now (I too am a victim of this but try to forget and enjoy what I have regardless of worth a lot or a little and of whether it has gone up or not since I purchased); and 2) that Journe is not for ...
