Patek Philippe 175th Anniversary Celebration in Los Angeles

Dec 04, 2014,00:02 AM

Continuing the celebration of it's 175th Anniversary, Patek Philippe hosted a private event at the Sunset Tower Hotel on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California.  The PuristSPro Moderator Team joined Mr. Larry Pettinelli, President Patek Philippe USA, to view a special exhibit and the unveiling of the 175th anniversary commemorative watch collection.  The star of the collection was the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime 5157R-001.

However before the unveiling of the Grandmaster Chime, we were treated to several displays of the current Patek watch collection.  One of my favorite parts of the event was having the opportunity to speak to one of the watchmakers that was flown in from New York just for the event.  It was interesting to speak with him on some of the movements.  There were several large scale acrylic models that demonstrated the watch movements which made it easier for guests to understand how things work.

A few real movements were on display as well.

Several display cases highlighted the Patek watch collection.  For women there were gem set models like this Ladies Nautilus 7014/1R-001.  The case diameter is a nice size at 33.6mm and the best part is the mechanical self winding movement.  The bezel is set with 56 baguette diamonds and the central bracelet links were set with 146 baguette diamonds.

In another display was one of my favorite Patek's, the 5270 chronograph with perpetual calendar.

And a watch I have not seen in person before, the 6102P Celestial.

After enjoying a few drinks and mingling with the other guests, Mr. Pettinelli greeted the crowd and gave a presentation on the history of Patek along with introducing the Grandmaster Chime.  We were shown two videos that highlighted the history of Patek and the accomplishments over the 175 year history.  A second video (which is also available on the Patek website) gave a comprehensive look at the handwork and design of the Grandmaster Chime.

After the presentations, the curtains were open and the official unveiling of the 175th Anniversary collection and the Grandmaster Chime were shown.

The Grandmaster Chime is a grand complication with two dials and 20 complications, and according to Patek took eight years of development.  In order to display all of the complications, there are two dials, one front and one in the back, and has a innovative case that swivels so that the watch can be worn on either side.  The 18k rose gold case is large at 47.4mm in diameter and 16.1mm thick.  The manual wind movement is made of 1366 parts.

On one side of the dial is the displays the regular hour and minutes hands.  At the 12 o'clock position there is a sub-dial with a 24 hour scale for setting the alarm.  A very small bell shaped indicator shows if the alarm is on or off.  At the 6 o'clock position there is a date and moon phase display.  Smaller sub-dials shows the power reserve for the movement and the sonnerie.  Small triangular displays on the left and right side of the date dial shows the settings for the chiming mechanisms.

On the other side of the dial the 5175R-001 focuses on the perpetual calendar display with a 4 digit year centered in the watch.

Besides being a grande and petite sonnerie, the 5175R-001 has an unique alarm that chimes the set time.  It also has a date repeater function that chimes the date.

Only 6 pieces will be made available to Patek customers, and 1 will be saved for the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva.

After enjoying the Patek watch displays we were treated to a delicious buffet meal with fresh chilled seafood and roasted beef along with tasty sides.

The bar was popular and served two signature drinks for the evening, appropriately named 'The Grandmaster' and 'The Calatrava Cross'.

Thanks again to the wonderful staff at Patek Philippe and Elle Molchan PR for organizing a wonderful event.  It was great to be able to see the Grandmaster Chime in person, and to join in celebrating the 175th Anniversary of Patek Philippe.

Regards,

Hi Gordon, thanks for reading the post. Unfortunately did not get to hear the chiming sounds. Even when they played the second video on the 5157, Patek should have ended it with a sound clip of the minute repeater chiming. Earlier this year during a Patek...

Question in regards to the Los Angeles event

 By: patekben : December 17th, 2014-16:36
I was wondering if anyone knows if this event in Los Angeles was sponsored by only one AD or was this the west coast 175th event for all ADs on the west coast?
