I stopped worrying about the market a long long time ago.

My experience over the last 30 years in this hobby is that from time to time watches become so popular without any reason or just deserve. This has been driven on occasions by dealers who have the most to gain financially.
Perceived popularity IMO is the main driver and I am absolutely convinced that if a Nautilus was never difficult to obtain it would be one of the forgotten ones. I can remember when you couldn’t give a 3700 away as it was perceived by the market as unattractive and old fashioned looking which of course it is.
This goes for several watches in this same category.
So only ever buy what makes you happy and what you like and makes you warm each time you look at it not what others think.
I genuinely get as much pleasure from one of my 5513’s or Tudor BB’s as I do my platinum Daytona or a patek.
The 5170 is a great watch like the 5196 and to me at least is what Patek Philippe is all about not sports watches.
So enjoy your 5170j and rest assured it will have it’s day like so many other overlooked models which lurk in the shadow of the Nautilus.
M.

Still cannot understand why hasn't 5170J become as desirable as many sports watches. People say, too many were produced, but certainly fewer were produced compared with 5711 or 5167.... ...

BIG +1 on this 👍

I did not 'love ' this dial when it debuted... But at just a glance a few moments ago, I thought... what is this fabulous Patek? So there is your answer. A few years... big uptick in popularity and value... But if I had to 'explain'... One issue is still,...

It wears like a dream...it is my favorite kind of gold (J)...

...but I am not a huge fan of the hands...not much character compared to the leaf version. But still very lovely. It has presence for sure... I am hoping for a yellow gold 5172J with a white/eggshell face.

Consider what is really prized by the general market...

Now consider if you would want your watch to part of that same taste and appreciate pool.

Well, entry prices for steel 5711 and 5164 are

much lower and hence more demand because of affordability. Perhaps 5170 will eventually become more prominent?

I have the 5170p and - although I love it - I think it would be way more in demand if:

1.) the bezel took up a greater % of the diameter of the watch (ie this is a relatively “thin bezel”) If you think about the most desirable models - 2499, 5970, 3970 - the bezels (ie the precious metal) on those watches are much wider than the 5170 relati...

I think the 5170 is a spectacular piece, especially the G with the pulsation scale and breguet numerals

Honestly I don’t understand why it’s somewhat soft on the secondary market. If I had to guess, I think it’s just because there are so many amazing options at that price point — both haute pieces and sport watches that are widely recognized from Instagram ...
