I prefer the 5130 case over the 5230 as the former in my eyes is pretty unique in the PP case line-up with its lovely rounded forms. 5230 case is more like “standard” case design of PP which can be found in pretty similar versions on other models.

But as I already own a 5130G and I strongly dislike the fonts of the 5131 and even more strongly dislike the engraving on the bezel the 5131 is not my cup of tea.

The near future will most probably bring us a 5231R and this is the model I’m waiting for when it comes to enamel dials.

From another collector in Germany I’ve heard the following story: a friend of him has ordered a 5231J and got it from his AD. The friend was not at all happy with the execution of the enamel dial as it was blurry and colour wise undistinctive. He refused the watch and his AD talked to PP in order to get another piece. But after delivery of the second watch the friend claimed the same low quality of the dial and refused to buy again. Dials of both watches were in much lover quality than on 5131 or other 5231J displayed on the PP website.

This is just a story that I was told and I did not see the watches or any pics of the dials. I would be interested if any of you guys have experienced or heard of a similar issue.

Many forum members have posted images of the newest cloisonné WT, the 5231J. Also many have posted 5131s, including the J. Which J do you prefer?

My take: Same land masses, but other than that, to me couldn’t be more different. Much more detailed and colorful map on the 5231, although colors are perhaps brighter and arguably more vibrant on 5131. Different hands on 5231 and Patek on the dial, not t...

Thanks for a really neat comparison Patekova -- you indeed nailed it on the differences between an already iconic "father" and its "son", though hopefully not the last two generations of the glorious Patek WT dynasty! ;-)

My personal preference, though I'm not much into J gold, is for the earlier 5131 versions in general...even if clearly less sophisticated than the 5231 in terms of execution, since the latter came over 10 years later. But I admit my preference for the 513...

The enamel work on the 5231 is much better and more intricate...

I wonder if the 5131 has this contour on the land and ocean? I like your England more than mine...😊 ...

5231 for me, the enamel work does look significantly more detailed

I do like the crown guards on the 5131 however

My biased vote for the 5131

Overall I prefer the 5131 but I’m biased. I like the map colors of the 5231 and the city font but prefer the patek name on the case as well as the case shape of the 5131. Kind of like that people have no idea what watch it is since they’re trying to look ...

Hi Patekova, Thank you for this interesting comparison !

IMO, key points of the two references are: 5231J: improved technique on the enamel dial because of the 10+ years of experience on the 5131 series, and 2) font for the city ring is more usual 5131J: 1) more vibrant colors (important to me on an enamel dial...

Cayenne, I hope you get a 5231R! (For me the R and G versions of 5131 are significantly more appealing than the J.) I am confident that

the 5231R will be beautiful! Interesting story about the the rejected 5231s. Never heard of something like that (but why would I)? When I got my 5131J years ago, after years of waiting and hoping for one, I must confess I was so thrilled to get it, that t...

Hey Cayene Something similar happened to me with my 5131P. I did not have the guts to turn it down when the opportunity to purchase it surfaced. But I did notice two things with naked eye: poor enamelling job (bubbling, much more evident with loupe) and a...

I‘d love to see the „Patek“ in the place of Geneva on the cities ring

That‘d be my preferred, stealthy way of branding the watch. In terms of 5131/5231, frankly I’m undecided. Love the 5131‘s fluid lines, the minute hand on the 5231 and the enamel work on both!

5231j for me

 By: db1 : January 3rd, 2021-07:57
Something about the case speaks more to me. With the angles and lugs, smaller bezel, in yellow gold has a vintage feel. Also think the enamel work is different, more detailed for sure. Have heard the enamel artist shifted from mother (for 5131j) to her so...

Thank you!

Very kind words. Much appreciated!

Are they both PP straps?

 By: NautNut : January 3rd, 2021-16:33
If so, what is the name of the color on the 5131?

Thank you.

Both are amazing but my clear preference is the 5231

 By: descartes1 : January 3rd, 2021-19:12
This is based on : finer enameling, font, dislike of PP name engraved on the bezel and case size.

Interesting comparison.

It is worth of course noting the differences in the J over the 8 or so years it was in production. ...

Well observed...

and these 2 J's you show are more desirable in my eyes than any 5231J shown

Not mine.

Just grabbed the image off the internet but shows how the style changed drastically over the production period

And another of a 5131J

Great point! The map is quite small to begin with, so why clutter it with the name? Traditionalists, however, feel it belongs on the dial.

Perhaps being a bit of a contrarian, there are things I like about both approaches.
