Your point is well taken, but 'planning one's portfolio' certainly isn't meant to imply a lack of caring or empathy for your fellow man and isn't done to look down one's nose at those who didn't plan themselves. If none of us consider the absolute worst is possible, and that worst comes to pass, then it is going to be much more difficult to recover. The watch collector and actor Peter Fonda put it best:  "..  I knew in the early days that if all fell to shit, [my gold watch] would get me and my family across any border."  One must remember that in the history of the world only an estimated 5 billion ounces of gold were mined, ever. When you consider lost gold, manufactured gold and central banks, there isn't enough for one in two people on the planet to hold a single ounce.  All the better when you can strap an ounce to your wrist and enjoy what it does.
