I think the problem is....

you, not PP. They have been making outstanding watches since 1839 and they have never targeted the...water-resistence-besotted...crowd. Buy your "grail", take another 100MTS W.R. watch with you at all times, so that when you'll need to...wash your hands...you, can wear the other one. Best of both worlds smile

Someone please explain the WR on the non sporty Pateks

 By: afaleh : May 3rd, 2021-23:50
So I am so very close to getting my grail Patek, the 5270p, just about to pull the trigger but the WR is holding me back. For me the 5270p is a major purchase, I am justifying it by telling myself it’s going to be my ultimate grail to end all grails, the ...

my guess is because its a dress watch?

 By: benzng : May 3rd, 2021-23:56
If it's a dress watch then maybe Patek assumes you won't swim with it. They want you to buy the Nautilus instead of that (as if that is easy?) . I don't know the water resistance of Nautilus ? anyway, I use my Rolex sports watch when I swim but 5270P is p...

My friend....pre-congrats to getting your grail Patek Philippe 5270P...

it is also a grail of many forum friends here. This is not a watch for swimming or taking a shower...30m is more than enough for workout sweats like crazy (although I don't recommend), drinking cocktails, gala dinners and even washing hands. Similar to mi...

Not my thoughts. Just an anecdote.

Three years ago I was touring the Patek service center in NYC. Mr Pettinelli was very kind to donate the tour for my daughter’s pre-school fund raiser. As I had made the request to him, I felt it best to accompany the winning bidders on the tour. Anyway, ...

i would like 50m WR so i can spontaneously jump from a yacht

 By: Dchang81 : May 4th, 2021-01:54
in all seriousness it has prevented me from buying watches since i like wearing them everywhere. i asked gronefeld the question and they said the main issue is the crystal, with it needing to be significantly thicker

I'm curious to hear thoughts on this too. If Bulgari can make the super thin Octo wr to 100M I don't know why others can't or won't

 By: Fastwong : May 4th, 2021-02:33
The notion that "it's a dress watch" or there's something undignified about taking a complication in the water is some pretty old thinking by the brands. Watches like the MB&F LMP evo and the DB28GS I think prove there's a customer for high horology t...

I am sure they can easily achieve 60 m waterproofing with modern technology.

 By: Pun : May 4th, 2021-02:38
It is just that the industry norm for WR is 30 m in dress and/or high complications watches, and apparently it's been accepted so far by the buyers. It is a great idea to increase WR to respectable level in all modern watches.

If assumed if you own a 5270 that you have a servanta whose job is to wash his hands if your hands get dirty.

 By: mkvc : May 4th, 2021-04:07
Thus, no danger to the watch. Seriously, though, you should be okay washing your hands. If you're going to the kind of party at which people fall (or get thrown) into the pool, maybe wear a different watch. Nevertheless, accidents do happen, and I feel th...

In my mind the issue is...

There are so many points of possible ingress for water, due to the numerous dimples on the case to set the day/date/moonphase/etc. A mechanism such as IWC’s where all Perpetual adjusting takes place through the crown makes it WAY easier to seal it up nice...

Just don’t get it wet.

I have a vintage Vacheron with no WR. If it’s not supposed to rain and I don’t plan to snorkel, I wear it as I please.

I have never had water intrusion issues with my 30m Pateks.

 By: Horo_Traveler : May 4th, 2021-06:09
Just don’t swim or shower with them. You’re talking 100ft of water resistance. That’s more than sufficient for a dress watch. Now, I can’t speak to Bulgari and how they rate their watches vs Patek, but in practical terms, you can use your Patek for daily ...

Would be great if they had the WR and rubber strap option

Just for the ability to quickly and easily rinse the watch under the faucet

Does this help???

Whilst not recommended I have been swimming in my 5970. M. ...

Not the case. Just a younger man who assumed it was Swim proof.

Seriously thought nothing of it at the time. Obviously now I know the error of my ways. It won’t happen again. M.

Good to know 👍

Some AP are only 20m wr. Their sport line is only 50m wr.

 By: shafran : May 4th, 2021-09:12
I believe 30m wr is fine for washing hands and other day to day tasks. 30m is quite deep when thinking about it. I would not swim in less than 100m wr but was told 50m is fine for that. I think you are overly worried for no reason. I wash my hands at leas...

My G-P ref:7750 is marked with a WR of 30m but . . .

 By: chippyfly : May 4th, 2021-09:35
. . . it has a screw-down crown, 6 screws sealed case back and a unidirectional rotating bezel like a dive watch. Why is it not marked/certified as 100m? There were only about 440 made in various metals and some came on a steel bracelet. ...

Let me try to answer this.

 By: joenghenry : May 4th, 2021-12:45
For a practically water resistant watch (ie. 100M), you need to have screw down crown and screw down pushers for chronograph. That would markedly alter the style of dressing watch like 5270. After all, you can’t expect all chronograph looks like Daytona ...

Many 100m wr chronos don't have screw down pushers

 By: Fastwong : May 4th, 2021-14:51
I think the brands can do it with almost zero impact on design if they wanted to

Thank you for your thoughts.

 By: afaleh : May 5th, 2021-09:49
None of them make this a justifiable issue though, Breitling just came out with a 5270 knockoff that has a 100M WR and no screw down pushers. I am thinking of picking that up for a daily wear and keeping the difference towards another watch TBH

My MB green dial LE hand winding chronograph also claimed to have 100M water resistance (10 bar). But I won’t take this seriously.

 By: joenghenry : May 5th, 2021-11:22
It doesn't have screw down crown nor pushers. High end chronographs are talking about smooth activation of the chronograph. You can literally see the thin gap between the pushers and case. I don't believe there is an O ring beneath each pusher, as the act...
