My advise would be.....

Go for which ever makes your heart miss beats. If you are a vintage man at heart then the 3448 is the obvious choice with its warm vintage aesthetics. But I do understand the pull for a grail Patek MR. The 5078 is a beautiful watch and is somewhat under the radar which in this world we now live in is becoming more and more important. For me a grail is the top watch for you. I don’t actually believe in grail watches because as collectors we will always seek a new grail.
Both are exceptional watches in their own category but if it was me between these 2. I’d go MR in any form.
Hope this help and I look forward to seeing your decision.
M.

I have two grail Patek in mind but

 By: CL : February 17th, 2020-08:59
I can only decide on one or maybe none. Sometime Grail is meant to just stay elusive and stay unattainable. My two grails are EITHER Patek 3448 Yellow Gold or Patek 5078 Platinum. I love the 3448 for its vintage and poetic quality. I love the 5078 for its...

Maybe I can explain a bit further...

I love PP3448J (more than 3450) and 5078P more than 10 years ago. They have always been my love. I am one guy who loves to wear very few watches as I want to spend good time with the selected ones. That's why they are considered my grail. I am okay if I n...

Go 5078

All MR’s are grails. Mine is a 5074r. I love it. M.

5078...

At 38mm it's a great size, and for that complication, 10.18mm tall is pretty impressive. The reason I would choose it is because it's clean and simple...and elegant. It's also amazingly stealthy. And unless you go to a watch GTG you will never see another...

Such a serious question and it’s still Monday...phew ;-)

This is impossible. But, my God, we have similar tastes.... So often... These are peak watches for me. I can’t decide between them. They are both perfect. Here is an alternative thought. You could buy one with a plan to keep it for tree years (just a numb...

Or owned none of them...

 By: CL : February 17th, 2020-09:37
Resist!!! hahahaha Maybe find a friend who owns them and keep having lunches and dinners with them... hmmm, not a bad idea

LOL. You will just get fat that way ;-)

Of course you have money to spend on nice restaurants ..LOL

Two very different pieces, but both amazing and at the top of their respective "fields", which is a major point at this level. So in either case, you'll have made the right call...

If money is not a decisive factor (the 5078P might require a few $100k more), personally I would go for the MR between the two, but I believe it should ultimately come down to which one irrationally attracts you more... Did you have a chance to try them o...

I had tried them both long ago...

 By: CL : February 17th, 2020-09:39
One of the main reasons that they are my grails is because of the size. I want the watches to be no bigger than 38.5mm.

Simple Trick.. Flip a Coin. But please, read on!!!

 By: Brandon Skinner : February 17th, 2020-09:39
Assign the 3448 to heads, and the 5078 to tails. In the air, in your head you will likely say to yourself, "I hope it's Heads" or "I hope it Tails". The result of the flip doesn't matter, what you say to yourself during the flip is your answer. GOOD LUCK!...

haha...

but I truly love both but have only one wrist. Anyway I tried your method and it spins three times, all head and I still cannot decide.

Definitely the 5078

I have a perpetual calendar and although it is lovely, I feel the complication is not very useful. The minute repeater however is the pinnacle of the watchmaker's craft. To have one in one's collection is the grail of all grails. The enamel dial of the 50...

Wonderful choices

I think both of these pieces would fit you very well, figuratively in terms of your horological tastes and appreciation, and literally in terms of your wrist. You don't mention whether you would prefer the 5078P with white dial (enamel) or black dial (lac...

You definitely have al the experience :-)

I wonder if you sometime will face the difficulty to choose which watch to wear for the day If you let me choose to strap on a 3450 or a 5078, I may consider bringing bout out . I know you have several other great watches too. You have a difficult life, m...

Oh... I forgot to answer you the dial preference.

 By: CL : February 17th, 2020-15:57
I like both. White dial is easier to read but this black dial with super white text is easy too. I think it comes down to which one I can afford.

I love both watches.

If I were you I would try to find a perfect 3448J. A Perfect condition 3448J is much harder to find than a perfect 5078P. Each piece is at the pinnacle of their respective category ( vintage and modern Patek watches) so if you can find the right 3448 that...

Ah...Perfect 3448 will have

 By: CL : February 17th, 2020-17:36
to be the ones owned by Mike H and Baron, and preferable bought around the time they bought. Imagine the amount of 3448s they had rejected before ending with their current ones... really hard work

Yes. That's my point.

By: Costa (aka Connie) : February 17th, 2020-17:54
If you are lucky enough to find a perfect 3448 then your decision is made by fate and hard work. ; buy it. This piece will have great meaning as a result of the trials and tribulations of the search. Otherwise purchase the 5078.

As almost everyone else is saying, the 5078 by a mile!

 By: jleno : February 17th, 2020-18:44
It's a better looking watch with the clean enamel dial, with a better looking movement as well. The minute repeater is also much more interesting/prestigious/rare complication than a perpetual calendar and Patek is the undisputed king of it. As you said, ...

Well that’s an excellent point.

By: Costa (aka Connie) : February 17th, 2020-18:53
Makes a lot of sense.

I totally hear you...

 By: CL : February 17th, 2020-19:17
but there is something about a good 3448 that is uber charming and the perpetual calendar 'force' you to wear it everyday. As for 5078P, it is stealth and handsome and also more expensive. Either one I get, I want to wear them as much as I can

John, you can't go wrong with either, but my vote is 3448J BUT only if you can find a mint, unpolished example.

 By: patekova : February 18th, 2020-06:37
Once polished, the razor sharp outer edges of the lugs are gone and for me that is a disqualifier. But why 3448 - stylistically nothing quite like 3448/3450 before or since, a timeless and somewhat contemporary design and diameter, the first ever automati...

Agree with that analysis completely.

Beautiful watch. One of the best ever made.

3448 (based on thought not first hand experience)

 By: Francoamerican : February 18th, 2020-17:19
1. Made at a time when there were very few ways to have a perpetual calendar on your wrist (pre LCD era) 2. Made without CNC 3. Hand lettered, hard enameling dial 4. Not being made any longer 5. Arguably the pinnacle of pre quartz (automatic, finishing, e...
