Patek Philippe

Hi mark

A most intriguing and interesting thread
1. It is to be expected that tastes change and todays favourites may not be this which collectors desire in 10 or 20 years
We vcan see this with bubble backs , Princes and even the highly desired 3970 have fallen out of favour. When the 5970 was released I never had much desire for one and lusted after a 3970 ,. I still prefer the design of the 39070 over the 5970 ( I also still collect Princes so I am not what sure what that says about my taste)
The number issue is a big factor in desirability I believe
I tend to agree that as humans we desire what we cannot have. Would we want the 5070 if it was produced in large numbers? I was offered one when they came out and passed because I did not like it - my taste has changed and would very much like to add one to my collection now.
But I think we would be fooling ourselves we did not take rarity into account when looking for a watch
Collecting vintage pieces if difficult on two levels
1. The numbers produced in the 40's 50's and 60's were very much less than todays volumes and 2. The Condition of these pieces are often sub standard with redone dials, polished cases etc making this type of collecting much more difficult as it is indeed a numbers game
However this is what makes collecting so much more interesting
If I could plonk down my credit card and buy a pristine vintage piece it would not be as exciting as chasing these rare models
Thanks again mark
Julian
