My favorite PP till date...

i'm fine with the movement, thanks to closed case back but the price point is distracting - there are good offers that picks your attention.

timeless design in deed !

BTW - you've well captured the beauty of 5196p - just magnificent !

Best,
Mahesh.,

First impressions of the 5196P

 By: Chromatic Fugue : February 18th, 2020-09:11
As I previously posted, I swapped a 5107P for this 5196P a few days ago. Some thoughts after a few days on the wrist: 1. It’s the thinnest watch I have ever owned (8mm) but far from the lightest. Particularly with the solid case back, the watch has a nice...

Best photos ever of the 5196P!!

Wishing you many happy hours with this lovely watch. I think if the movement is not visible, it is less relevant that the movement is small compared to the case size.

+1 [nt]

thank you ... and I agree. [nt]

It is almost criminal...

 By: mdg : February 18th, 2020-09:43
that this watch doesn't have a larger movement. I still hold hope that PP will design a replacement for the 215 that will better fit a 37-40mm Calatrava dress watch. The problem is, these types of watches (time-only, dress, elegant) seem to be less and le...

Would a larger movement not lower the subdial...

 By: Brandon Skinner : February 18th, 2020-09:50
Thus eliminating that beautiful 6 from the dial? I can fully understand your point but sometimes good comes out of bad, or as you say, criminality.

Agree

Subdual location allows all similar Arabic numerals which is pleasing. In my opinion the ring inside of the numerals is what throws off the symmetry, perhaps should be enlarged to coincide with encompassing the seconds subdual. Excellent ref

Not necessarily...

 By: trs : February 18th, 2020-12:01
While a small movement obviously leads to the subdial being near the center the subdial can well stay there if they designed a larger movement. No need to lower it...

Agree...

All 5196 variants wear large for their size driven by the large dials (=narrow bezels), the light dial colors and by how thin they are. I am tall but found the 5196G and R too large for my small wrists. Never tried on the P which should wear a little smal...

Wow, the last photo is so great that it deserves...

wow wow wow 🤩 🤩 🤩!! When did you use to take that macro ?

thanks!

just your basic SLR and a 100mm macro.

I’m no expert

 By: Jurry : February 18th, 2020-10:03
But the way I see it is that the movement (big or small) is not visible whilst the only impact of small movement I can detect on the dial, is the fact that the seconds sub dial is now (such a relief) not eating into the 6 indicator. Nor is it creating thi...

To me, this is a GREAT watch.

Small movement with Closed case back...it makes sense. What I don't understand is why there are many collectors complaining about this piece with too small a movement while rarely I hear that about 5070? If one can accept 5070, One can accept this. I acce...

one of the most beautiful calatravas

 By: mblum3 : February 18th, 2020-10:53
There is the fantastic "scientific" dial from the 1930's and the extremely rare and expensive ref 530, which by the way might have been the inspiration for this watch. That one measures 36.5mm and came with a Breguet dial. Someone mentioned that the numer...

thanks ...

Both this and the 5107P are great Calatravas. But it seemed too decadent to own both.

my pleasure! [nt]

 By: ZSHSZ : February 18th, 2020-11:47
I think you know my standing with this reference, it’s the most appealing Calatrava in the recent production. Small moment? Who cares, I don’t see it, but what I see is that everything stays clean, nothing interferes with the other indications and that al...

haha! thanks! [nt]

Possibly the best time-only Calatrava of all times

 By: mrds : February 18th, 2020-11:56
This one has such a huge presence for such an understated watch! I think it’s pretty magical. Wear it with pride and a smile on your face! Daniel

I will -- thanks! [nt]

The charm of an occluded . . .

 By: Dr No : February 18th, 2020-12:47
. . . 6 probably has more to do with convention . . . [33 mm Ω ref 2364] . . . than aesthetic considerations. Or, to put it another way, old habits die hard. Plus, the subdial of your Calatrava is centered between the cannon pinion and the northern border...

Now THAT's a well-executed subdial!

And I miss that western-facing shore of yours, Art. : )

mine as well - thanks! [nt]

The most versatile of the 5196 models. Denim up to and including a tuxedo. Starker 5196 options are beautiful too, however this platinum manages to be traditional AND contemporary. Does anyone share the opinion that another (although 2-3 times pricier) wa...

Fascinating comparison!

The 5170R white dial is my favorite iteration of the 5170 series. I even posted about it here last fall when I briefly thought about buying one (went with a 3940 instead). Interestingly, it got a cool reception from others here, but I do love it.

equally beautiful! : ) [nt]

You should NOT post such photos without a warning notice. Because now I can't get this 5196P out of my mind. I already had a sweet tooth for this ref, but now I'm doomed. I guess I need to thank you for that.... ;-)

+1 [nt]
