My comparison between the two are as follows.
Common: both are calendar sport watches, with practical water resistance
Difference:
Dial: 5726 is easier to read, more contemporary. 5740G is more crowded and classic layout like 3940/ 5140
Profile: 5740 is slim, while 5726 is slightly thicker
Metal: 5726 is truly white stainless steel, 5740 is grey white.
Weight: 5740 is heavier

I actually have viewed the 5740 and had it on my wrist. It is an extremely special watch. That said, all things considered, for me I prefer having 5726.
I have. 5740 from 2018 and it was the only watch I selected at Baselworkd 2018 and that year had iconic releases..

The nautilus looks most attractive with only 2 hands on the main pinion.. But in this case, 5726 comes out on top - I prefer the blue and nautilus should be in steel

Thank you Henry for the compliment and detailed comparison. I have a somewhat different view about your comment that the 5726 is “more contemporary”.
For me the layout of the dial with month and day windows at 12 and sweep seconds harks all the way back to the 2497. That said, for me they are both clearly creatures of the modern era in both design and function. Best, Patekova
