5711 vs Darth

Jan 11, 2022,23:50 PM

Hi all -- as I posted a few months back, I got a good deal on a 5711 blue and went ahead and bought it. I really quite like it, in the way that I really like any well-fitting sports watch: it looks great and feels great on the wrist. I admittedly was influenced by the star power of this model. But I find that I don't wear it much, for the predictable reasons: I worry that every scratch would eventually cost me $$, I don't want to attract unwelcome attention, etc. I now have an opportunity to trade it for a greater rarity: a 1999 platinum Lange 1 Darth. I know that these are very different watches, and that what matters is what I like, not what others like. That said, if my gut is telling me to take the path that is less traveled and more interesting (Darth), would anyone think I'm acting unreasonably?

Speaks volumes where you stand as to your "collecting evolution". I'd do it in a heart beat, but I'm a Lange junkie. Good luck either way and thanks for your contribution! 🙏😉👍

Absolutely...

Unless the 5711 economics (anticipated appreciation) make the trade unbearable, I would definitely go for a piece you love and will wear over a piece that merely looks good on a winder. The Darth is a great Lange...under the radar and relatively rare. Che...

Lange every time

But I don't like nautilus. I am rare. Also no one impressed by the watches I have or wear so doesn't matter to me what is in. Buy what you'll wear.

+4

The Darth is so much more watch

I would never keep the 5711 because of the hype. If you don't wear it, take the profit and get the lange

good opinion ✨✨

Platinum and all black Lange 1? Yes please!

Love the 'Darth' nickname...

...I play golf with a guy who we call 'Darth Fader.'

No idea about valuations but the 5711 is unwearable (as you state) and therefore useless to you.

Makes sense therefore to me to leverage it into to something else. The Darth is a cool iteration of another iconic watch. So you still have an icon, but perhaps then a wearable one.

No, go for the Lange

I just went to the website of our favorite company…

OMG, how that Darth’s spaceship went supersonic 😱 There was an ex-moderator sold his here in the CM in late 2020 for less than $28k and I was actually tempted. Now I can only congratulate the brand from afar. Oh by the way, congrats to you too, saw watch ...

A watch you’ll wear is always better

…than the watch you’re not.

thanks, and alternative idea

Hi all -- thanks for your comments, and must say I'm impressed by the pro-Darth consensus on the Patek forum. That said, I'm having second thoughts: as Clueless Collector says, the price asked here is literally unprecedented, and by a wide margin. My own ...

As Gilda Radner would say...

never mind! One's first instinct is usually the right one; my first instinct was to go with the Darth, and that's what I'm going with. Many thanks to everyone who responded to my initial post.

easy decision

The 5711 would be more my style of these two (though I prefer AP), but this is an easy decision...always go with what YOU like most rather than what is hyped most. (One of my "mistakes" early on was getting a Daytona, not because I loved it, but because e...
