Experiencing the ref. 5170j

 By: Mr.Gatsby : April 18th, 2021-03:32
Took the plunge on this less than popular reference recently and have started to dedicate a portion of my time and finances on understanding Patek chronographs. The manually wound chronograph has been a favorite complication of mine for years. However due...

Your observations are well founded Nico :-)

The sub dials below the 3 and 9 o’clock are similar those of the 5270 vs the 5970 I think? Speaking of the 5070, if only I can pull that off on my wrist ! Would be a dream come true. Best Regards Gatsby

I think the 5070 is still doable for me

 By: Mr.Gatsby : April 18th, 2021-03:51
In terms of purchase price (I hope! Lol 😆). Most important would be wearability.

Looking forward Mon Ami ;-)

The PP journey has begun for me.

Me too!

The 5170 came at a wrong point in time

By: COUNT DE MONET : April 18th, 2021-03:51
The 5070 was the first manual from Patek in 60 years or so and was hence very sought after, to say the least. The 5170 being in-house and technically far, far more advaced than the 5070 was not able to repeat the craze of the 5070. The craze would have be...

Thank you count ! :-)

 By: Mr.Gatsby : April 18th, 2021-03:57
I do agree that the 5170 came at the wrong time. It should’ve been produced earlier, in response to the datograph back in ‘99.

First off, congratulations on your new chronograph!

 By: ZSHSZ : April 18th, 2021-04:16
Same as you, I had the chance to try all the competitors, my good friend has a 5070G and I wore it for a week, and as many times I glanced at it the first thing that came to mind is that it’s a “mistake”, one can clearly see that Patek tried to hide the s...

Thanks Zsolt for your comments

I am not surprised that the ref. 5170 has its fan base. But I must admit, they all have their pluses and minuses, and that I must say is largely attributed to taste and preference. I really enjoy reading the feedback/comments from the community. It is alw...

This 5170J is awesome mate !

Congrats and well done ! Beautiful dial, movement and case to me. Nice size and a future classic IMHO. Thanks for the awesome pics side by side your Datograph Cheers Robin

Thanks Robin :-)

Personally, I'm still trying to get used to the look of the 5170J. The dial feels a bit larger, despite the 39,4mm diameter. I suspect this is due to the conical bezel and also the white opaline dial that makes it look larger versus say, a black dial. I d...

Congratulations on this superb time piece !

I agree with many comments pertaining to the positive and important aspects of the 5170 so I’ll refrain from repeating them. What I will say is, all watches, like people are flawed. There is no perfect watch for all people. It comes down to how the final ...

H :-) You are my inspiration !!

The P variant I think is my grail, so to speak. I wholeheartedly agree with your view that all watches - like people - are flawed! Very interested to carry on discussing watches with you. Let's correspond via DM soon. Cheers, Gatsby

Thank you Mr. Gatsby, I’m flattered.

Congratulations,you made the right choice!

I do share many of your arguments, especially about the perfect proportions and the historical relevance for PP. My choice was with the G version but it was a close race with the yellow gold model. As for the comparison with the 5070,can one really overloo...

Aww man

You gotta teach me how to take such great looking photos That is a great shot of the 5170G...quick question, do you like this more than the 5170G black dial variant? I somehow enjoy seeing a pulsometric scale. The black dial though version though more uni...

It was specifically the pulsometric scale that attracted me to this version.

 By: jlux : April 18th, 2021-08:51
Therefore, for me,a bit more attractive than the black dial G version. As for the picture, thanks for your nice comment.

Hi Fab :-)

Thank you for your kind words. My knowledge is definitely limited! And the purpose of this so-called review is to hear from collectors - especially the old timers - how they view the ref. 5170. I am quite sure at some point I will move to look at the 5170...

Thank you Gatsby for such a great review !

Happy for you to have selected a piece which is wearable and speaks to you ! Enjoy it often!

Hello mate :-)))

 By: Mr.Gatsby : April 18th, 2021-08:48
Thank you for your kind words. Glad you enjoyed reading my short write up. I tend to focus more on my ownership of the watch and less on the technical details and aesthetics which are all very well covered. It's great to be able to share my thoughts here ...

That movement!!!!

I love it and love the watch

Thanks Jurry

Yellow gold really looks good on this piece.

Thank you M8 :-)

I think you chose well my friend. The 5170 is an amazing reference and wears better than the larger 5070. I prefer the esthetics of the 5070 and also the CH27 (I am a fan of the Lemania 2310 base caliber)...

 By: holdemchamp1225 : April 18th, 2021-09:54
but that does not diminish the 5170 nor it's in-house caliber, both of which are excellent. I have also thought about adding a 5170G or P eventually if I stumble upon one in NOS condition 😉

Ahhh

If you can’t choose, get both ? ;-)

A true dress watch...

 By: mdg : April 18th, 2021-15:07
...that happens to have a chronograph function. I don't need a pulsations dial, but I tried one one a couple of years ago--if it had leaf hands I'd probably own it. It is very classy and very easy to wear on my 7.25" wrist...

Thanks for your comments mate :-)

 By: Mr.Gatsby : April 22nd, 2021-18:42
I do understand your love for the leaf hands — I like them a lot. For me the hands of the 5170j fits in with the baton and Roman VI and XII markers... give it another go ! Best Gatsby

Bill :-))))

Too kind... and glad to know you’re a chrono sorta guy. Please show me your stash

Firstly congratulations on your wonderful new watch.

I hope it brings you many many years of enjoyment and pleasure. All I can say is this. I agree with all the comments here from all the different angles. I for one am big enough to put my hands in the air and say I was somehow blinkered by the 5070 at the ...

Thanks for your words Miles

I’m interested to know why you’re drawn to the 5170 even after owning the legendary 5070. Also, which reference/case metal will you go for ?

I think sometimes one gets blinded by love.

 By: Miles_151 : April 23rd, 2021-07:50
I’m sure we have all been there. At the time of the 5170 release I was still in love with the 5070. I can only explain it like this. When I had one son and my wife was expecting our second I remember thinking how am I going to love this child as much as I...

Nothing clumsy about your reply. In fact the sum of all these replies - including yours - gives me greater clarity on the merits and faults of the said reference. Thanks for taking the time to reply me. I really enjoy such discussions. Best, Gatsby

You are welcome my friend.

I hope to join you in the 5170 club before very long. M.
