Another 5711 “bomb” on the way?

 By: Patekfinity : May 12th, 2021-00:16
Take a look at the Stern interview article from today in Hodinkee… Maybe a surprise coming… ...

I just read this article…

 By: mdg : May 12th, 2021-00:31
…and wrote an honest reply that was less than favorable to the Stern gods. I think I am on Santa Dinkee’s naughty list because everything I write goes into the gray moderation zone and most get deleted for good. The site can brook no dissent. They want ev...

Not a fan of Hodinkee collabs

 By: Patekfinity : May 12th, 2021-00:37
I’m not a fan of Hodinkee collaboration watches as well. But find their articles interesting read and enjoy the video interviews of Talking Watches. So far last year has been sparse in the ppl they are interviewing

They have 'some' good content...

 By: mdg : May 12th, 2021-00:44
...but they suck up to everyone in the industry, especially the Sterns. And they have become increasingly 'woke.' Some of their recent essays spend half the time bashing white, heterosexual men...I can get that crap from TV...tell me about watches.

Agree with Mdg

 By: Gelato Monster : May 12th, 2021-01:00
Their earlier collab is sincere and have strong unique character

1...I have basically lost interest in Hodinkee.

 By: vitalsigns : May 12th, 2021-03:28
Hadn’t been there for a long while. Used to check it every day or two. Just went back and saw an article imbued with politics. Nope. I’m out... John

I missed that bashing

 By: Tim_M : May 12th, 2021-11:11
Could you link to an example of that or DM it to me? Best, Tim

Hodinkee helped make 38 mm watches cool again.

 By: jmpTT : May 12th, 2021-02:25
For influencing the market away from 45 mm hockey pucks, Hodinkee will always have my gratitude. I feel as though the publication has gone in a direction where I only on the periphery of the audience they are now trying to sell watches to. Hodinkee is no ...

I'm not exactly sure how they influenced anyone in the direction of...

 By: mdg : May 12th, 2021-03:53
...smaller watches. They review everything that comes along, just like other sites. Their commenters (me among them) called out hockey pucks and tuna cans when we saw them. Awhile back I made the comment there (surprisingly not censored) that they could e...

 By: PalmSprings : May 12th, 2021-07:43
They didn't do anything. Come on... The things people make up. Amazing. This is 2021 I guess.

I have asked them to delete my account

 By: mhz vph : May 12th, 2021-01:18
The censorship is such that it is no longer worth trying to say anything there.

But it's still fun (for now)...

 By: mdg : May 12th, 2021-01:22
...to jerk them around a little bit : )

Why is that wrong if Hodinkee managed to collaborate?

 By: chintu : May 12th, 2021-02:26
Everyone applauds if Beyer or Tiffany manage to put their logos on a Patek dial and the market lusts after those. If Hodinkee does it with a brand similarly, is that wrong? Are not magazines like Revolution Watch or influencers like William Massena etc ef...

If you're an investor and buying/selling watches trying to make a profit...

 By: mdg : May 12th, 2021-03:58
...and a Tiffany logo increases the value, then God bless you. I would prefer that my dials have as little extraneous text as possible.

There is a difference because there is an inherent conflict of interest if a media/publication provides editorial commentary and reviews on a product at the same time as having a financial stake or commercial relationship with the manufacturer.

 By: Bounce781 : May 12th, 2021-05:35
This is not just a commentary on Hodinkee but on ANY other publication/blog/podcast, etc doing the same. For example, I wouldn't consume news reporting on war in [insert conflict] if that publication was sponsored by Raytheon, etc. What kind of objectivit...

News have to be objective and only present facts, while..

 By: chintu : May 12th, 2021-12:12
Reviews of any product or even a movie or a work of art are always subjective. A reviewer whose affinity is towards traditional watch-making may never be able to do an objective review of an avant garde and off-the-narrow-path watch, even with all sincere...

News has never been fact-based...

 By: mdg : May 12th, 2021-14:18
...that's an ideal situation that rarely, if ever, comes to pass.

Well said Chintu... But there's a bigger picture too.

 By: patrick_y : May 12th, 2021-14:39
The problem is this... What if some collectors who are new to the game (the potential profits in the watch world are drawing in new speculators/collectors) who listen to a critic's every word... They often listen to Hodinkee praise watches that Hodinkee g...

Amen : )

 By: mdg : May 12th, 2021-19:22

Well put, Patrick!

 By: Bounce781 : June 13th, 2021-22:45
👍🏻👍🏻

While I agree with you, I think there is a distinct diffidence between clear advertising and,”native advertising”...

 By: Bounce781 : June 13th, 2021-22:44
Where the “review” is a paid for advertising without it being stated. I too am happy for H or anyone else to do whatever because I am past the stage of my collecting where other people’s opinions sway mine but I still think it is not possible to be a watc...

I agree with you. But Hodinkee would argue...

 By: patrick_y : June 14th, 2021-19:02
Hodinkee would argue that their editors and writers aren't told specifically to mention the brands they carry in a more positive way. But they probably would admit that they do write about those brands more simply because they have more access giving them...

Great post🤣

I have been moderated and deleted as well on some previous posts in the comments at H

 By: LS : May 12th, 2021-11:36
I find it troubling since I used no foul language and kept comments on topic (or what passes for it on a watch blog, anyway). And the comments just disappear and no one from the staff ever reaches out to explain why the comment was removed or give me an o...

if patek resorts to a dink collab

 By: Dchang81 : May 12th, 2021-00:40
i know peoples heads will explode in excitement but considering how hot patek models are i really hope they don't resort to this gimmick.

That would be a disaster...

 By: mdg : May 12th, 2021-00:46
...it would be like Tiger asking me for swing tips : )

Has no one ever learned anything from Panerai?

 By: Brandon Skinner : May 12th, 2021-01:22
Patek can discontinue the 5711, then roll out the 6711 with a 1mm larger/smaller case or some other mild tweak and continue on their merry way. Just like the old trick Panerai has used for ages.

Maybe along the way...

 By: mdg : May 12th, 2021-04:00
...they can figure out how to match the date background to the dial.

By then it could be the 7711

 By: Brandon Skinner : May 12th, 2021-04:26

Patek doesn’t trade at 40% off for new

 By: CastorKrieg : May 12th, 2021-04:10
Like Panerai does.

And your point is?

 By: Brandon Skinner : May 12th, 2021-04:26

I’m not saying they should use Panerai’s practices, but

 By: Brandon Skinner : May 12th, 2021-05:27
I’m saying they could.

Getting back to the article…

 By: Patekfinity : May 12th, 2021-02:43
This news is NOT about a Hodinkee collab. It is more info from Thierry regarding a possible upcoming release of FINAL 5711 version aside from the green dials

Not that it matters, but the Stones have never announced . . .

 By: Dr No : May 13th, 2021-20:23
. . . a final tour. There's been speculation aplenty, including from yours truly, over the last thirty years that this or that tour would be the last, but not from the Stones directly. I'm still holding a ticket for the Minneapolis show canceled last year...

A promoter, perhaps? Or, as you say, just rumor and speculation...

 By: vitalsigns : May 14th, 2021-04:19
Or maybe it just feels like there *ought* to have been a final tour. But they keep going... Good luck with the rescheduled show! John

It’s a bit of a puff piece from Jack F

 By: Esharp : May 12th, 2021-02:52
...the puff piece bit doesn’t surprise me. Lots of stuff on Hodinkee is puff. Jack Forster is one of the *only* people doing professional watch writing who seems to have any integrity and whom I still respect (a big shout out to SJX for keeping it honest ...

Ouch! That must hurt.

Data

 By: JBB : May 12th, 2021-03:32
When I got my first Nautilus (3710/1A), I bought it because it appealed to me – at a (nice) discount! It was very easy to buy. I became a fan of the brand. That was awhile ago, and since then it seems Patek has become the Hermes of the watch industry. OK…...

I’m a collector and I don’t care.

 By: Horo_Traveler : May 12th, 2021-04:07
If I can’t get Patek’s green or maroon or yellow watch, I can always purchase the Timex MK1 hand wind which is certainly more charming than a Patek leather strap that costs more than the Timex. The point I’m making is that most of us who’ve been collectin...

Sadly watches have turned in to an asset class for investors.

much more interesting in this interview:

 By: patrickh : May 12th, 2021-05:41
"We had about five different colors , and this one ( green ) was very nice with the steel , that’s how I decided. You do it from prototypes, you try and you look at it, and you have to pick one color." So, we could expect a new version in YG or RG case an...

This seems a plausible scenario to me, too.

 By: Gwai : May 12th, 2021-06:10
I must say Stern's "there might be yet another one coming" is mildly annoying me as an uninvolved bystander. Will the industry's talking heads please grow up, please. Cheers Marc

Rose gold with a yellow or red dial.

As an afterthought, I find it interesting how many of you

 By: Gwai : May 12th, 2021-07:33
obviously found it plausible that a 5711 collaboration with the Dink was upcoming. I, for one, would say with stern conviction that something like that just could not happen, ever. (And if it did - I wouldn`t have thought an AP super hero watch possible, ...

What a poor interview!

 By: drphileasfogg : May 12th, 2021-18:28
Second question from Jack Foster: why are you not doing connected watches? Seriously!

Only interested in this “One more thing…bomb”

 By: Patekfinity : May 12th, 2021-23:57
I figure the only way to go out with a BANG will be to release a Salmon dial 5711 similar to this Salmon dial AP. Hopefully this will be the BOMB that Thierry is referring to… ...

Is not this dial thing getting too hyped?

 By: chintu : May 13th, 2021-02:27
Plonking in a new colored dial deems uber-cool and is being made to look like the next biggest horological achievement of the century. Brands are milking this craze of green and salmon dials merrily; and influencers are adding dry fodder to this fire. And...

Rumors…

Fingers crossed
