Looking for my perfect Patek

May 23, 2020,15:33 PM

I love the watches in my collection, but I’m always looking for the perfect watch and have yet to find it. I think I know what perfect looks like - for my wrist and style - but I can’t seem to find it, no matter the price

If designing it, the criteria would be:
1.) 38-40mm
2.) white metal case
3.) 3 registers chronograph complications
4.) leather strap
5.) 11-13mm thickness
6.) 20-21mm bar between the lugs
7.) 47mm or less from lug to lug across the watch
8.) extra curved case and lug design
9.) non-black dial (find it too dressy for daily wear)
10.) white metal hour hands
11.) “bright” (sunburst?) dial

There are several “almost” models:

1.) an “almost” 5970g, except for the “black” gold hands and batons (or 5970p but without black dial) - they just look too matte and I like the shine of white metal hands and markers (you get this on the R and J models but not white metal obviously)

2.) an “almost” 5270, except it’s like 50mm lug to lug vs I’d like 47mm or less (on top of being 41mm case). If this watch were a little smaller I think it’d be near perfect

3.) my 5205g is pretty close but no chronograph; could use slightly shorter lug to lug profile (tho the slope makes up for it)

4.) my 5170p is pretty close but no calendar and I wish the lugs were slightly more sloping

5.) my 5960p is pretty close (size, Chrono and calendar, metal mix hands) but it has only the single sub dial instead of the 3 registers

5.) the 3970s are “almost” except the 36mm size
5.a.) same with the 5004p - even at 36.5mm I think is too small

6.) finally the 5204 with white dial actually does fit. I don’t know what it is but I just don’t love it. Maybe it’s the cream dial that’s too matte (misses my shiny dial criteria) but in fairness I’ve only seen it in photos

Anyway, if you think I’m missing a model let me know! I think Patek should let me design my own smile~

Off brand but the Langematik perpetual is close except no chronograph. Otherwise white metal, metallic markers and hours, 38.5mm, 11m I think is close to my criteria, shiny platinum dial I have the original Daytona which with the grey sub dials is sporty ...

There is no perfect watch

All in all, go with one of the perpetual chrono you mention above, such as 5970.

5372P - 001? [nt]

And hopefully soon when travel is permitted once again. M.

Go with one of the almost models and enjoy it

Perfection is an illusion. It simply doesn't exist. For me the 3970 always appeared too small. But hindside I have to say that it is and will be the most desirable model in my collection. Could be a bit larger but the perception of size changed over time....
