Lean towards VC

May 18, 2021,21:27 PM

Both are spectacular, "simple" watches with underrated versatility.  The case on the VC when viewing from side is very nice, different from the Patek but to my eyes just as nice.  The platinum VC in particular is stunning and if i had to choose between these two I would lean towards VC.  I do have a major soft spot for the 5296 sector dial in white gold.  I've been debating between different variations of the VC versus Patek's Calatrava's for awhile.

A tale of two classics.

Note to mods: please move to correct section ifł necessary. Before actually acquiring, I was always comparing these two classic models in my winds eye. Here, I try to capture them together, albeit poorly, for a side by side clomparison and contrast. The V...

both are classics.

Due to the bezel of the 5107 (I much prefer the convex one of the 5127, but there is no P for the 5127 ), and the date, I vote for the VC. I think the slate Pt traditionnelle is one of the most successful (in execution) classic watches of the last 10+ yea...

+1 word by word

Cheers Marc

This is a perfectly rational argument

but my emotions would lead me to the PP. It has something special to me

Very well said, Alex.

I agree with each point made.

and I forgot to call out the hands of the VC....I have never seen such sharpness and finishing in anything out there.

I find particularly funny noone singles them out, but they are mesmerizing.

My feelings exactly.

Not to take anything away from the 5107 - it is a gorgeous, elegant, quintessential Calatrava. But my heart speaks for the Traditionnelle.

I do indeed have a strong tendency...

to curate pieces with certain structural and/or design elements that are very similar but with nuanced detail differences that make each of them important in my collection. Probably my small Reverso sub-collection is the most obvious example of ‘redundanc...

They are both classic watches and good choices.

To me, it comes down to how it fits on your wrist. Furthermore, the VC has a more modern feel vs the Calatrava which has more of a vintage look. Let us know what you decide. Is having both an option ?😉

Thank you very much, G. You make a key point about fit.

They are actually both mine, with the PP being a long time favorite. But since my wardrobe for a give day influences what watch I reach for, the fact that this past year was ALL casual, I hadn’t had chance to wear the PP at all. Even the VC i see as dress...

Looking at an A.Lange 1815 would not hurt

The 1815 is a simple classic incorporating the best-in-class German traditional watchmaking. IMHO, a watch worthy of comparison with the duo.

Totally agree!

The 1815 appeals strongly to me, but I wish they offered a platinum model.

I share your sentiments, although I am attracted to the mini crown guard on the PP.

But as GLau said above, I view the PP as more vintage and the VC as more modern, relatively speaking. In reality, I feel they are both timeless

5107P is a great stealth watch and one of my favorite Calatravas ...

... but I haven't pulled the trigger yet as I might get a Lange 1 Darth first and I already own a little platinum Calatrava with the same 315 SC movement. The VC is nice too but not on my radar ...

My favorite dress watches

 By: Park : May 21st, 2021-03:42
I have the same two as my only true dress watches. I consider both elegant and understated. I prefer the automatic movement and central seconds hand of the 5107P, but do wish it were 38 or 39 mm. I've considered adding the 5227G, but since these two are s...

Both are very similar to me

Equally beautiful. I would have a very hard time choosing between these 2. But I like less common things, less commercialised, and perhaps I’d rebel and go with the VC, with the Patek still on my mind.
