Will Patek polish a scratched rotor and movement bridge?

 By: Lambda83 : September 15th, 2020-06:03
Hi All, Recently bought my grail nautilus 5980 from a dealer who serviced the watch with his in-house technician. Only discovered after getting the watch back that to my horror the minute hand rotor has scratches and part of the movement bridge has tiny s...

Ouch

 By: vitalsigns : September 15th, 2020-06:09
I think replacement parts would be necessary, and replacing the rotor should not be a problem. Not sure if Patek would replace the bridge you noted. The other bridge pictured, which also has scratches, has a serial number (I believe), so Patek may decline...

you know...at first i thought you were exaggerating when I saw the first picture...

 By: WH_ : September 15th, 2020-06:23
But with every following picture i realize that indeed the AD watchmaker massacred the finishing of the movement. Scary stuff, i'm really sorry this happened to you

It seems that

By: Jari from Finland : September 15th, 2020-06:26
there are also other scratches as only those you had circled.

sigh you are right..

 By: Lambda83 : September 15th, 2020-06:35
the serial bridge also has scratches.. I'm wondering if Patek service centre is able to refinish the cote de geneve on the bridges / rotor

Got a good and a bad news

 By: Passionata_george : September 15th, 2020-06:48
PP is very proud that they can repair any watch they ever built ,if parts not available they still have the machines and skills to manufacture the that s not a problem. and the bad one(s) It will takes time and $$$. You may can talk with the dealer but e...

thanks for that..

 By: Lambda83 : September 15th, 2020-06:55
i will probably go down to the service centre and try to get an estimate.. dealer is able to take it back.. but i am weighing the costs now.

If the dealer will take it back, then return it asap

 By: vitalsigns : September 15th, 2020-07:07
Problem is, you don't know the condition of the rest of the movement, so you cannot know the costs to fix. Therefore you can never know whether you received a reasonable price from the dealer or not. Sure, you can roll the dice, but if the dealer treats v...

Agree!

Return the watch for a full refund is the best move

5980 is a lovely watch

 By: Passionata_george : September 15th, 2020-07:07
I d try to get fix it on dealer s costs, win win especially for you😂

Welcome here, and sorry to hear about this! I'd query Patek by explaining the situation in detail (including that a non-authorized watchmaker already serviced this watch).

 By: FabR : September 15th, 2020-06:36
If Patek decides to take over the job, then get a quote (and if necessary a lawyer) and inform your grey dealer that they will promptly reimburse all expenses. Hope you'll soon come to a fully satisfactory resolution to this incident...and that you can en...

Sorry to see that.

 By: DDM : September 15th, 2020-06:40
Can you not get the dealer to cover AD repair or return the watch and search for a mint one?

Totally unacceptable. You need to speak with the dealer, and depending on his response, etc, then speak to Patek.

 By: Boron : September 15th, 2020-06:42
Assuming the watch was outside of the manufacturer’s warranty, then Patek will invoice for the replacing or refinishing of the parts damaged, which you will have to recover from the dealer.

Thats really a bad job they did [nt]

I don’t think they will polish out the scratches on the bridges.

 By: Makilla : September 15th, 2020-06:58
Usually bridges are made of brass and rhodium plated to have the white color. So basically if they remove the scratches the plating will also be removed. They will surely replace the scratched parts with new ones. The person who worked on your watch is de...

I don’t know

 By: ripper444 : September 15th, 2020-07:35
Was the watchmaker/service certified by Patek and allowed to work on their watches? If not I can see this being thousands of dollars if sent into Patek

Was the service part of the purchase?

 By: Patekfinity : September 15th, 2020-07:46
Why was the watch serviced if the dealer just sold it to you? Did you ask for the service after purchase? So many questions... 1- if the watch was purchased and had issues that needed service from the dealer...and this was the result then I suggest you do...

1&2

 By: Lambda83 : September 15th, 2020-07:57
I bought the watch, but it was having power reserve issues and also running fast. hence it was taken back by the dealer for servicing.. dealer's proposal is to take it back now. but we haven't discussed at what price of a refund. i'm siding more towards a...

Refund!!

 By: Patekfinity : September 15th, 2020-08:05
I would get a refund and think of this as a lesson learned. Move on...no need to wait for more service issues on this. Even if this watch was fixed, the resale on it will never be the same again. It’s like having a car and getting into an accident, the ca...

I would push for a 100% refund.....

 By: dizzyhorophile : September 15th, 2020-08:14
This watch is going to cost you thousands and months to get back to normal - I'd push for a 100% refund and find a better example. Sorry this happened to you - no idea why butchers like this work on Pateks... Can you imagine the damage he's created to oth...

I would strongly urge a return for a refund. Even if you go down the road of sending to Patek regardless who pays...

 By: doubleup : September 15th, 2020-12:38
You will have months of waiting for the watch, stressing about the potential cost and not knowing what will be replaced and what won't. From what Makilla said, it sounds like you will still get your grail piece back with blemishes. This should be such a h...

The technician needs to use brass tweezers

 By: cazalea : September 15th, 2020-07:47
Because they are softer and won’t damage the steel parts. And/or tools with protected tips for the gold items such as the rotor. After having made some marks on my own watch, I got a scolding from my mentor and sent off with a set of his brass tweezers an...

learnt something new

about brass tweezers.. thanks!

You are thinking Revlon (as shown here)

 By: cazalea : September 15th, 2020-11:06
Watchmaker tweezers are excellent for removing splinters but not so good for nose, ear and eyebrow hairs. You need the specialty ones shown below. ...

Hilarious! [nt]

This butcher needs plastic tweezers...

 By: patrick_y : September 15th, 2020-12:19
Or at least tweezers with plastic tips. Brass tweezers would still scratch...

This is a bad experience, sorry to you had to go though it.

 By: K-Lo : September 15th, 2020-08:37
Sometimes, even the watch company’s service center are clumsy. AP scratched up my 15202 when sent in for full service, lack of care in general.

sorry to hear that mate

 By: Lambda83 : September 15th, 2020-08:43
did they manage to fix it?

They re-polished the bracelet, which didn’t need any

 By: K-Lo : September 15th, 2020-08:49
Re-polish in the first place, and ended up leaving marks on the bezel. Watches usually come very clean from the factory, service can be a literal hit or miss. Hope it all works out, I find many who work in the industry do not care half as much, if that. a...

Nice Not so nice ...

🤦‍♂️

 By: LS : September 15th, 2020-16:54
What on earth! At least they didn’t get out the scotchbrite to clean it off..

Welcome to the Patek forum and sorry to hear about this sad news !

 By: GLau : September 15th, 2020-10:52
Assuming your AD told you that the movement was in good condition, you should definitely get the AD to reimburse you if Patek can restore the movement. If you AD will not, then you will have to figure how you can make they agree to it. 😇

All parts

 By: lascases : September 15th, 2020-11:44
can be replaced by Patek - you just need to place the request.

That's actually pretty bad... Patek Philippe may insist on replacing parts. Please tell us who this dealer is.

 By: patrick_y : September 15th, 2020-12:17
This watchmaker wasn't very careful. Unfortunately s/he made huge scratches. Who is this dealer? You should ask the dealer to compensate you for these problems. Better yet, just get a refund. These are incredibly unreasonable mistakes. Total negligence an...

 By: lascases : September 15th, 2020-23:58
once told a friend that it is normal for a watch described as „in excellent condition“ and „like new“ to have multiple scratches on the rotor and movement parts. Unfortunately, my friend only told me after my own bad experience with them :-(

I'd get my money back and RUN away from that shop!

 By: r0gue : September 16th, 2020-02:26
It'll never be right for anything approximating a reasonable cost. Get. A. Different. One.

Wow, this looks very bad. The movement is Full of scratches almost everywhere.

 By: Erg2000 : September 16th, 2020-08:47
Did the watchmaker put the parts into a dishwasher? This is some serious damage. The owner should demand a full refund.
