It may be possible for the seller to send you the piece before payment . . .

. . . although the reverse is usually the case. Visiting the seller face-to-face is also a good way to fully review their bonafides. Arranging the meet-up logistics usually requires several points where red flags can go up. If you see one red flag, call off the deal.

As a practical matter, if you must do the transaction over the internet and not face-to-face, attempt to have as much communication with the seller as you can. Ask for images of everything, including papers and box. Maybe have a "face time" or "zoom style" call with the seller (with a specific agenda that you set.) Throughout all of this, you must be looking for various red flags. For example, are the responses taking too long? Are there a lot of excuses for not doing what you ask? Is the seller traveling and in different locations so that there is not one, commonly used address? Is the seller not acting as you would if you were selling a costly piece of horology? Ask for references to other people and dealers that can verify whom you are buying from. As I said above, if you see one or more red flags, you should probably not move forward and politely extricate yourself.

This is a very difficult situation to advise you on as you will need to make the buying decision based on may factors. I would prefer it if you didn’t name the seller openly in this post. My advice is to “buy the seller” and keep your wits about you. If y...

Hi Kev, as advised by the Captain, if you want to buy from a grey dealer, the good old "buy the seller" is always the first rule to follow.

Thanks for not disclosing the dealer's name publicly, as we do not host dealer reviews (grey or otherwise) on our forum. It's not a direction we want to take, and for obvious reasons, it just wouldn't be scalable. You provided enough information (your and...
