Is that really true?

I find it hard to believe that perpetual calendars are significantly more difficult to make and assemble. The original 5035 had almost 100 more parts than the 3940. Even if true the movement components & assembly labor is probably a fairly insignificant portion of the overall production cost.

5270 vs 5960

 By: rip9er : May 7th, 2019-05:25
Can someone please explain why the 5270g is twice the price of the 5960g ? Is the price difference justified on a technical level or is it just esthetics? 5270g Perpetual calendar Chrono (30min) Moon phase Day night indicator Manual wind 5960g Annual cale...

Not going to discuss pricing specifically

But 5270 is part of the high end range whilst the 5960 is part of the generic range of PP. As far as I know, the level of finishing is different and the complexity of the perpetual calendar mechanism is also higher than 5960. In a nutshell, to explain the...

... are on the two sides of the movement: the front side of 5270 is much more complex as it has the perpetual calendar. The read side is much more refined as well. Also, you can see it better as no rotor blocks the view. I like the more 3d like case/dial ...

Even harder to understand

In short: Grand Comp vs Comp....

A QP is inherently harder to make, assemble, decorate by hand (and requires a lot more math). Perhaps 100-300 pieces per year (a guess). An AP of this ilk is a great machine, to be sure, but is serially produced, so easier to produce. Most likely 600-1200...

Classic chronograph vs modern chronograph - different priorities

 By: jmpTT : May 7th, 2019-08:26
Not just a matter of value, but also client expectation. Basically the Patek 5960 has a vertical clutch automatic chronograph movement, designed to offer superior technical performance and be easier to assemble and service. The Patek 5270 has a manual win...

Please let’s not reduce our love of watches ..

to the issue of money. It simply kills the love.

If I had the budget (and courage :D)

I'd love to get a 5270R/G Ultimate piece! 究極の一本!

Why do we need to pretend that money is not an issue within the watch community?

Most people don't have millions of $ to spend on watches so the question of relative value is completely legitimate. At least that is my opinion.

The simple answer is ...

Connoisseurship, ownership and collecting is about much more than price and who sells what. Price and seller references tend to overwhelm the other more subtle, though equally important aspects of the aficionado experience.

2x is too much. then again maybe PP would just increase the price of the 5960G if it reads this thread.

Ha ha i hope not!

As much as I love the 5960 it’s unfortunately not very popular since it’s very visible in many ADs. That or there are much more of them produced.

Except for the stainless steel black
