I think

you are correct. In 10 years I may well be back to a 3940! The 3940 is such an excellent design and is so comfortable to wear that it fits perfectly into Dailey life. Its an easy watch to forget about and draws very little attention to itself. It’s low profile also means that it is prone to less damage. It really is a perfect ( albeit very complicated) watch.

Supposing you were only going to have one Patek...

5110 or 3940? That's the short version. Long version is, I currently own one Patek, a 5110G. I love it. It's perfect. But I also love the 3940J. It's also perfect. Do I stick with my world time, or switch to the perpetual? How to decide? Your thoughts app...

Hard choice but

 By: Rex2 : February 15th, 2021-13:59
I vote for the World Time.

Interesting... 3-0 in favor of world time so far!

 By: blau : February 15th, 2021-14:16
I was expecting you all to be more divided (like I am within myself!)

I am surprised at the answers so far.

By: Costa (aka Connie) : February 15th, 2021-14:24
I would say if it’s one Patek you want why not own one of the most classic perpetual calendar watches ever made, 3940? It is the archetypal watch of the Patek brand. It has so much importance for the brand. It saved Patek during the 1980s quartz watch cra...

Easy for me.

...

Yes it an easy decision for you Nic! 👍🏻

By: Costa (aka Connie) : February 15th, 2021-15:13
Superb watch. Iconic!

Merci.

 By: amanico : February 15th, 2021-22:52

That is absolutely correct and a good point.

 By: blau : February 16th, 2021-08:44
There are LOTS of perpetual calendar watches that I think are excellent (almost too many to name!) but very few non-Patek world times that I appreciate. Svend Andersen... Krayon (if that counts)... Lange and Nomos both have really good full city ring watc...

Both such great watches and both micro-rotor endowed. I'm just biased towards the WorldTime.

 By: patrick_y : February 15th, 2021-15:55
The 3940 is a beautiful watch. I absolutely think it's a great timepiece. And a fantastic watch. It's a gentleman's watch. But my favorite is still the WorldTime; it is a cosmopolitan's watch, not quite a gentleman's watch, but still a very sophisticated ...

'Gentleman's watch' is exactly it.

 By: blau : February 15th, 2021-16:18
When I think of owning a 3940, I think of it as an only watch, of wearing it every day and it elevating whatever I'm wearing and whatever I'm doing. Slim, tasteful, subtle perfection. That's a true gentleman's watch! But the truth is, I'm not really that ...

I'm not that kind of a gentleman neither...

 By: patrick_y : February 15th, 2021-23:09
But it would be a great daily watch to own and wear! I just like the WorldTime. I find the WorldTime watches to be very elegant and cool. The thin-ness of the 3940 is very elegant. But at the same time I want something that's a little more modern and the ...

 By: trs : February 15th, 2021-17:16
I have been wondering if there are any late 5110Gs in grey gold or if they all came in plated white gold. If I there are any in grey gold I'd go with 5110G, otherwise straight to 3940P. I have always wanted to like the 5110P but whenever I look at it the ...

No Hesitation for Me

 By: baufoam : February 15th, 2021-17:16
I would choose the 3940. Absolutely, without a doubt. I wore one as a “Dailey” for 10 years and gave it up. That was a mistake, and so I will get another 3940. I cannot recommend the 3940 high enough. It’s a perfect watch. You just can’t go wrong with the...

10 years as a daily and you gave it up?

 By: blau : February 16th, 2021-04:03
How could you??

After 10 years.....

 By: baufoam : February 16th, 2021-08:21
of wearing it nearly every day, I think I started to take the watch for granted ( another way of saying that I got bored with it). I also went through a phase where I didn’t want to be wearing a”Dead Man’s Watch”. I wanted to have Patek Philippe of my own...

Makes sense.

 By: blau : February 16th, 2021-08:50
5320 is super appealing, too. Less likely to bore you but also, I bet, less likely to slide quietly into 10 years of daily service. 3970 is a whole other story, and an *utterly* worthy only Patek. But it costs significantly more than a 3940 and 5110 combi...

If I were to have one Patek and had to choose from those two it would be the 3940 hands down. It represents the quintessential Patek; thin, elegant, complicated and exudes class in an understated way. Of course it also depended upon how much

 By: edtonkin : February 15th, 2021-17:54
you actually need the World Time function. My dear friend has a yellow gold 3940 for years. I hand carried it for him to New York several years ago for a service. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a watch look as good as that 3940 does on his wrist. Amazing. ...

I don't really consider the world time function to be a practical complication.

 By: blau : February 15th, 2021-19:54
There's too much daylight savings time back-and-forth across the world. It's all about the romance of *representing* the whole world at once.

WT for me

 By: agyzace : February 15th, 2021-20:44
For PT horological significance but also for being the only complication that beats any digital device. That’s no small feat. Plus it’s ever more relevant in our globalized business world. So win win win for me. All the best, Alex

5110 vote for me

 By: xxn : February 15th, 2021-21:59
its a dream watch and more versatile than a 3940 which seems like an ultimate dress watch.

3940j all day long. I just let my eyes and heart do the work. The 3940 is a Classic patek for me and ever since sitting having lunch and seeing one on the wrist of Mr Stern Snr it has always drawn me. Not to mention the classic complications which to me a...

I agree on usefulness terms...

 By: blau : February 16th, 2021-08:53
though I'd have to get a winder, too, to actually take advantage of the 3940's useful complication! What's the good of having a perpetual calendar if you're going to have to reset the date every time you put it on?

Agreed. Or just wear it every day 🙏🏼👍🏼

5990 for me

 By: happymsp : February 16th, 2021-03:08
Travel time, chrono, and in a Nautilus case.

Not under consideration!

 By: blau : February 16th, 2021-04:00
And really an entirely different sort of Patek than the ones I'd consider.

Although I love Patek WTs, the 3940 is also designed very well, hence a tough choice between these two ! IMO, it

 By: GLau : February 16th, 2021-05:21
depends on which sings to you more. For me if I have to choose without price as a consideration, I would go with 3940, Reason is that the PC is slim and contains a very big punch 🥊!!

3940J for me

 By: BuffaloWatch : February 17th, 2021-12:00
I have a 5230R and 3941J and honestly I prefer the 3941 for the size, look and functions. I don’t find the world time zones as useful as I thought I would. However, when I look at the 5230 as a design — especially from a distance, where I’m not trying to ...

The 5110

 By: mrds : February 17th, 2021-14:08
...because it‘s not only top elegant, flawlessly executed and a Patek icon. It’s also cool, in its own distinctive way. The 3940 is all of the above but not cool. It has a perfection to it that is probably unique. However, the danger is that sometimes too...

Subjective, yes

 By: blau : February 18th, 2021-04:12
But I suspect our subjectivities overlap on this one--I have the same suspicion about the 3940 for me in the long run, and for the same reasons do not fear for the 5110. I think I'd better keep the 5110.

Ah, my good Blau

 By: Chromatic Fugue : February 18th, 2021-18:16
Do not fear the too-perfect. As St. Anselm taught us, if you can imagine a perfect watch, it would be more perfect If it existed; therefore, it must exist. And indeed it does. ...

That white metal 3940 is top notch!

By: Costa (aka Connie) : February 18th, 2021-18:41
Timeless classic. Love it.

The ontological proof of the existence of the 3940!

 By: blau : February 18th, 2021-19:10
Never thought I would see the day. Hats off to you! Next version: the fool hath said in his heart that he should not buy a 3940...

Exactly! Don’t be that guy.
