I think what Amanico is saying is that, traditionally, a watch is required to have all of the stated complications to be considered as a grande complication, and not simply one of them or any other combination [nt]

Patek Philippe 5520P: The surprise of the Chief.

 By: amanico : March 19th, 2019-12:22
A 42, 2 mm platinum case, 11, 6 mm high for this Alarm Travel Time from Patek. The Alarm can be set on 24 hours, and the big question is to know if it chimes like a minute repeater or not. I would say yes, but I need a confirmation. The dial is ebony blac...

It makes so much sense...

 By: g_schroder : March 19th, 2019-12:29
For PP to incorporate an alarm feature into a travel watch, as I'm guessing much of its clientele travel regularly, so kudos on that. I have to think that it would be a little more attractive if they were able to incorporate some of the setting and windin...

You are right Nico!

 By: sham1 : March 19th, 2019-12:33
The price is quite extraordinary which explains why Patek has classified this watch as a grand complication instead of merely as a complication. The price is too complicated for me!

Which is why I think that owners of Patek chronographs

 By: sham1 : March 19th, 2019-19:43
are short changed as a Patek Chronograph is classified as a Complication and not a Grand Complication. Not sure why.

Superb!

 By: keks : March 19th, 2019-12:41
Bit unfortunately a stretch for my wallet. Also platinum 42.2mm is likely a bit too heavy for my wrist but I think it is a top top cool release. Bravo!

no matter how well it feels on test

 By: keks : March 19th, 2019-13:42
at that price point it is a no go for me.... there are simply too many alternatives up at that level that would place themselves ahead in the queue

A wider comparison could also bring two other pieces into the picture...

 By: shortys home : March 19th, 2019-12:42
... being the Breguet Reveil du Tsar and Blancpain GMT Reveil. That price point gave me a serious chuckle, I have to admit. This to goes beyond the usual Patek surcharge. Cheers Henrik

The use a beautifully black polished hammer on a gong...

 By: shortys home : March 19th, 2019-12:47
... and we still do not know how the Patek sounds, do we? πŸ˜‰ Cheers Henrik

It looks funny

 By: benlee338 : March 22nd, 2019-17:13
for sure but I think it's an acquired taste.

excellent offer...much useful complication !

 By: mahesh : March 19th, 2019-12:55
there is a reason why PP is PP !! Best, mahesh.,

Thanks, Mahesh. [nt]

 By: amanico : March 19th, 2019-12:56

It will be hefty

 By: Centurionone : March 19th, 2019-13:00
Hopefully not 300gm

I will report back

 By: Centurionone : March 19th, 2019-13:05
when I try it this weekend

Yes, please! [nt]

 By: amanico : March 19th, 2019-13:07

I am sure that they would have gone all out for the gong

 By: Centurionone : March 19th, 2019-13:24
Β£176K is quite a price tag if it sounds tinny I will try to record it if I can

Thank you! [nt]

 By: amanico : March 19th, 2019-14:21

If it was 52mm...

 By: lascases : March 19th, 2019-13:36
... it would be perfect

LOL! Good one! [nt]

 By: amanico : March 19th, 2019-14:21

now just close the eyes and imagine...

 By: Izhik : March 19th, 2019-13:54
if they would invest and develop some under lugs adjusting mechanism similar to what Blancpain did... how this watch would look like..instead those 4 relatively huge pushers...

+1 [nt]

This type of PP typifies what I call the 'PP absurdity paradigm'

 By: Mostel : March 19th, 2019-14:04
Head shaking... but to each his own.

Chuckle...

 By: Mostel : March 19th, 2019-14:40
Because of Miranda's (reasonable) recent post... I want to be tactful and respectful, as we should be here... I mean to say that many of Patek's pieces are 'absurdly under-creative' relative to their price. (This is an IWC? Montblanc? Zenith? Sinn...? wit...

I would be less radical: I really like the concept, much less the realization, as I wrote before, and the price... If you compare it with a Nardin Sonata...

 By: amanico : March 19th, 2019-15:07
IF it sounds like a minute repeater, then there will be the second or the third to do so. The addition of a superlative alarm and a travel watch pleases me a lot. The way it is designed doesn't drive me crazy, though. And the price is making me scratch my...

Fully agree.

 By: Horo_Traveler : March 19th, 2019-23:20
It has all gone a little haywire, as have I, having switched to an Apple Watch and can’t find any compelling reason to give these new PP trinkets a try. Still have a mechanical collection, but mostly older pieces now.

P-A-P. Nice one. Hmmm Reality - distortion - field, a similar genre of observational labelling

 By: Rapwatch : March 20th, 2019-09:36
This piece is mind blowing. What Tremendous Following PP are lucky to have, Rap

In a titanium case and discounted $150k . . . .

 By: M4 : March 19th, 2019-14:22
. . . I'm all over it! 🀣 M4

For that you have this one...

 By: amanico : March 19th, 2019-14:36
...

That I don't know. [nt]

 By: amanico : March 19th, 2019-14:35

From my understanding...

 By: blownhippie : March 19th, 2019-14:32
The movement had only one hammer thus producing one note. I would think that the one note would be played multiple times at the designated alarm time.

It could absolutely,

 By: blownhippie : March 19th, 2019-15:10
though I would think Patek would make a point to mention this. I guess we will find out shortly!

Too many crowns [nt]

 By: reintitan : March 19th, 2019-15:11

I think I’m among the consensus. Interesting technically, less so aesthetically.

 By: 5980 : March 19th, 2019-15:55
But Nico mentioned it precisely: let’s not rush to judgement, particularly vis-a-vis cosmetics, until we’re through the handling and gestation period 😊

Got pushers?? [nt]

 By: Thomas_3 : March 19th, 2019-16:21

Ha! [nt]

 By: amanico : March 19th, 2019-23:05

This will be grail [nt]

 By: Gelato Monster : March 19th, 2019-16:47

This, 5320G and 5370P [nt]

 By: Gelato Monster : March 20th, 2019-05:49
it would be very comfortable in steel

I think the extra pushers balances the dial better. My view is that they were

 By: Patekphilippecollector : March 20th, 2019-00:53
Always 2mm too long....now we know they can do an alarm lets hope they use it lore...say in a worldtime

CONVERSATION PIECE$$$$

 By: vicunaman1 : March 20th, 2019-01:09
The 4 prominent pushers, alarm feature, a fresh interpretation in a Platinum case

Incredible piece with outstanding technology! 😍😍😍

 By: dom007 : March 20th, 2019-01:33
I hope it sits well on my tiny wrist....

Definitely interesting - but so then is the price!

 By: jml_watches : March 20th, 2019-01:47
I'd be intrigued to hear what it sounds like too. I'm I interpreting it correctly that the alarm time is shown in dial apperture? Does it mean it can only be set to the quarter hour? Cheers JML

I wonder ss a poor mans repeater. This will

 By: Patekphilippecollector : March 20th, 2019-02:57
Be an application piece?

damn I like it... I like less the price

 By: Tyo : March 20th, 2019-03:07
the complication even if it's not a grand is very usefull. Nico, you have to show me your sonotra. So many stunning pieces you have, we need to catch next time I'm in town.

Rumour has it ....

 By: Centurionone : March 20th, 2019-05:27
That ref 5520P won't be available for handling or listening at BaselWorld.. that's disappointing. Although one can view the watches in the cabinets at the fair, unless you have an appointment one is unable to handle them. After all it is really a trade fa...

Thats odd as i handled everything at baselworld last

 By: Patekphilippecollector : March 20th, 2019-06:12
Year except the 5531 and rare handicrafts. Didnt think 5520 would be different to 5270P

Good addition!

 By: RGS : March 20th, 2019-05:50
It is a very good strategic addition to the Pilot Calatrava line, targeted at a very niche market. In my opinion, the main point for PP here is to create extra status for the Pilot - with the use of a "Grand Complication" within the line - and to boost in...

Honestly

 By: Mr.Gatsby : March 20th, 2019-09:18
I find four pushers two on each side of the case to be a bit odd
