the difference between the 3rd and 4th series 3970 lies in the serial numbering of the watches. The series 4 watches came directly from the factory with a deployant clasp, but the series 3 watches also cam with the same clasp. Someone here on the Forum is going to know for certain. I was never able to tell any physical difference in the watches from the 3rd or 4th series themselves.Truth is, I did not know that people even considered there to be a “4th Series” 3970 until very recently.  I really like the faceted indices on the later model 3970’s. They are all such beautiful watches.

...... what I've also read and seen on youtube. So then, what are the serial number ranges for Gen 3 vs 4 ? Any idea of the production numbers for different color metals ? Thanks.

My estimates

based on appearance in auction: approx. 2000 in J approx. 700 in R, W, P (each) thus a total of slightly above 4000. First series (snap back) only in J, as far as I know. Maybe about 10% of total. So maybe 1500 second series (all metals) and 2300 third se...

.... to an article from Hodinkee www.hodinkee.com y The article does differentiate Gen 3 and 4 by way of the serial number. Seems appearance wise, there is no significant or consistent differences unlike the Gen 2. thanks for sharing.
