I don’t think he knows...
Mar 27, 2020,12:12 PM
He is in a cigar bar. He notices your 5130. Here’s what’s going through his mind:
1) this guy has a nice watch
A) he has money but knows nothing about watches and is a poser.
B) he knows a lot about watches.
If he believes his watch is genuine:
2) we have something in common
A) if 1A, he will he impressed with my watch. Let me show it to him.
B) if 1B, he will be impressed with my watch. Let me show it to him.
If he knows his watch is fake:
3) I will flaunt my watch because:
A) 2A, this guy probably knows nothing about watches.
B) 2A snd 2B, this is such an awesome fake nobody can tell it’s fake.
C) I’m such a brazen liar I am shameless enough to show my watch to Thierry Stern and ask him to service it.
D) I should tuck my watch into my sleeve and hope this guy doesn’t spot this obvious fake.
So either the guy is completely clueless, or a brazen liar. Sort of a weird thing.
The few people I have encountered wearing fakes are extremely proud of their fakes and tell you how even experts can’t tell they are not the genuine thing. I haven’t run into anybody that tried to pass of a fake as the genuine thing.
But well done for being a gentleman and not embarrassing him. Although if he knows it’s a fake, you probably have him even more confidence that most people, even Patek owners can’t tell the difference.
