Thanks so much for the review. I am not a big Perpetual  calendar fan but I really do like this watch. I love the hands, dial symmetry,  and the shape of the bezel. Very attractive piece.

Baselworld 2017 First thoughts on the new Patek Philippe 5320G Perpetual Calendar

By: Mark in Paris : March 31st, 2017-13:20
Dear all, Next to the recap article of the whole Baselworld 2017 collection I posted (here, ), I wished to put forward, in different threads, a few important novelties that Patek Philippe has released. Let me start first by what I find to be an unexpecte...

Great review as usual Mark! :-)

 By: sham1 : March 31st, 2017-13:28
I did try the watch on and although it is 40mm, it was not too large for my small wrist. However, unlike the large fan base this watch has developed, it is not my favourite Patek perpetual calendar. It ispriced very well and is great value for money thoug...

Thank you Sham :)

By: Mark in Paris : April 1st, 2017-09:10
It is new and it has different elements from what we are used to seeing from the brand, thus it naturally won't appeal to all the Patek fans, at least at the beginning and before they see it. Thank you for the feedback on the size. Best, Mark

Thank you Mark,

By: Time to watch : March 31st, 2017-14:00
for an insightful and enlightening review of the 5320. I would imagine that if/when this watch comes out in yellow gold the vintage feel will be even greater. The apertures for day / night and leap year seem relatively smaller in comparison to 5270/5204, ...

Indeed, it will have a very different look depending on the material

By: Mark in Paris : April 1st, 2017-09:13
Whether it is J or R, or just a dial color change, I think the watch will look very different. I'm really looking forward to see what will be its place in the long run. A very interesting moment Thank you for you nice comments H. Best, Mark

Interesting detailed review Mark

 By: patrickh : March 31st, 2017-14:12
Many thanks. The historical listing is great to look at. I need to see it in real to fully appreciate this 2017 winner in the PP collection. Best, patrickh

Patek is giving a lot

By: COUNT DE MONET : March 31st, 2017-14:24
Three tiers, 40 mm, new vintage feeing sapphire,, silicone spring ... but for some reason I have got the feeling that Patek is also holding back some things with this piece: new way to produce a case, replacement of traditional metall alloy springs in mor...

Great review as always.

 By: NML77 : March 31st, 2017-14:54
Thanks Mark. I really appreciate these overviews. I met with my AD today to discuss his Basel takeaways and to put in my order for this watch. As you can imagine, I was not the first to put in the request.

That's a nice move :)

By: Mark in Paris : April 1st, 2017-12:38
I see that it has seduced you. It is a very nice project, I hope it will come soon for you and that you'll be able to share it with us if you take the plunge. Thank you for your nice comments! Best, Mark

This watch brings a lot indeed

By: Mark in Paris : April 1st, 2017-09:30
and thus we'll need time to fully appreciate its place and role. Your second remark is interesting as I like that the brand explores other paths but it should remain at the level where it is in terms of know-how and craftmanship. We already have discussio...

Lovely summary as always Mark!

 By: keks : March 31st, 2017-14:55
There is much to like in this new reference. Personally my impression is a slight sense of disappointment in Patek going down the retro route. It seems many manufacturers are hoping the vintage hype can be capitalized on by recreating modern iterations of...

+1.; this one is trying too hard to look vintage,

 By: drphileasfogg : March 31st, 2017-15:16
I want my watch to get a patina not to buy it like this. Definitely the problem maybe the hands and the dial color.

That's an interesting topic I wanted to discuss in the future

By: Mark in Paris : April 1st, 2017-13:12
We often have discussions about how aesthetical issues can be perceived, considering that each of us might have a different background (cultural, how long we've been interested in watchmaking, our wearing habits etc...). That's essential to understand how...

Very thorough exposition Mark.

 By: keks : April 1st, 2017-22:04
Well worded and highly astute as usual and a pleasure to read your thoughts Mark. To me Patek is feeling the waters in two directions this year. One can argue the trend among modern timepieces is towards sportier wristwatches. Especially considering how s...

I agree with you, thank you keks

By: Mark in Paris : April 2nd, 2017-02:22
We'll see in the years to come how they manage to do this. Best, Mark

I think the dial and hands is an exact copy of reference 1591 Perpetual Calendar

 By: mikephuvie : March 31st, 2017-15:11
Please see ref 1591, Christie's auction November 12, 2007. Only two were made. The stainless steel, unique, went for $2,513,000. Very rare indeed. The other one known has gold case. Would probably bring a lot more today. I do not have the pic to post, per...

The layout of the 1526, the first one to use that layout, has been used in several other references afterwards

By: Mark in Paris : April 1st, 2017-15:12
More precisely, I think that the minute ring and date display is not like the 1591 but more like the 2497 for instance (open and not circled). The hands have indeed been used in the 1591 you're refering to (1944) but also in the 1463 (1940 to at least 196...

Thanks for this very interesting review, Mark.

 By: amanico : March 31st, 2017-23:22
The sapphire is a surprise. The case as well, as I didn't see that shape on the pictures, before. Both details please me. And I agree when you say that the sapphire glass makes yo think about a vintage one. Do you have some pictures of the case back? Very...

My pleasure Nicolas

By: Mark in Paris : April 1st, 2017-15:22
The Sapphire is indeed a nice way to gain 1 or 2 mm on the case, in addition to the spirit it brings to the watch. I haven't got a caseback picture but I'll share one if I can see it next month. Thanks a lot for your very nice words, I'm glad you enjoyed ...

Great review of a great watch.

 By: dr.kol : March 31st, 2017-23:46
Patek has now three versions of a "base" perpetual. Interesting to see if this model will develop into a full range of four metals. Best, Kari

I'm looking forward to this as well

By: Mark in Paris : April 2nd, 2017-07:10
It is an interesting approach and we well see how it develops in the years to come. If done the right way, it can bring very nice models as there are so many possibilities to decorate the dial or to choose the colors. I think it is interesting to setup th...

Hi Mark, another excellent review on the 5320 !

 By: GLau : April 1st, 2017-10:19
It is a really clean in terms of the dial's layout. Cheers, Gordon

You're right

By: Mark in Paris : April 2nd, 2017-16:07
Indeed, the fact this model displays the information in windows compared to subsidiary dials lightens the dial and makes it more legible too. It is nice to see that they bring that dial layout back in the collection. Thank you for your input and kind comm...

Superb, Mark!

 By: Tonypatch : April 1st, 2017-11:32
Great article!!! Other than that: my grandmother called, she wants her alarm clock back. I dont like this watch, as I did not like the pilot one.

Mark, thank you for your scholarly review of this watch and describing how it is an homage to the past combined with a modern sensibility.

 By: patekova : April 2nd, 2017-15:37
The multiple images of the 5320G combined with images of prior related Pateks, chart and videos bring this watch to life in a vivid, contextual way. For me this is potentially the best Basel offering and could be a game changer for Patek in arousing inter...

My pleasure Patekova :)

By: Mark in Paris : April 3rd, 2017-08:40
It is interesting to have your point of view as well as I know you have a very good knowledge on Patek watches, modern but also vintage. Having a look at watches today is different whether one has a vintage background or not. Usually, the vintage backgrou...

This is a wonderful review. Thank you Mark!

 By: KCLQMULKU : April 2nd, 2017-15:48
I think this is an absolute gem of a release by Patek. The white gold case augments this timepiece\'s majesty. Perfection.

I think it is a great move

By: Mark in Paris : April 4th, 2017-11:07
that is shown in the welcome it received. It has new elements from the ones we have been used to seeing for 2 decades now but it is opening a new trend that will evolve, maturate thanks to its great assets. Thank you for your feedback and nice compliments...

A great read as usual Mark! Thank you.

 By: KamalRostov : April 3rd, 2017-16:50
This reference is indeed an evolution and in my opinion, a fresh approach... although this may not float everyone's boat, the 'younger' and 'young at heart' PP fans would probably love this iteration [I'm guessing]. The dial seems esthetically 'lighter' t...

I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

By: Mark in Paris : April 5th, 2017-14:39
I think that it will indeed appeal to many of the current Patek owners and newer generations not yet owning one and it will in the mean time not please, at least in the first period, a part of the current Patek fans that are attracted by the previous gene...

The 5320 is wonderful. A modern watch with vintage flair.

 By: RussW : April 5th, 2017-10:40
One of the highlights of Basel this year. I really like the case and lugs too - I would love to see this case being used for a manual chrono.

I think Patek has found a few very nice elements to create that model

By: Mark in Paris : April 6th, 2017-14:00
The case is very interesting indeed. I think that they will prefer having a distinct case for the chronograph though. I think the watch can combine very nicely with a black strap too. Who knows Thanks Russ. Best, Mark

This is a great watch...and I look forward to..

 By: christianch : April 5th, 2017-13:31
see it in Kari's collection

I'm looking forward to it too

By: Mark in Paris : April 7th, 2017-13:02
Thanks for your feedback Christian Best, Mark

Thanks Mark for your early review on this model.....

 By: Topcat30093 : April 7th, 2017-15:10
Personally, it was my favourite of the show. And I look forward to viewing it in the flesh later in the year.

My pleasure Topcat :)

By: Mark in Paris : April 8th, 2017-08:43
Nice to have your feedback about the 5320G. Indeed once some of us will have seen it, it will be nice to share our opinions. Best, Mark

Great Watch

 By: gaquist : April 10th, 2017-09:22
I love the look of the 5320G, and have not been so enthusiastic about a modern Patek in a long while. I think this watch is going to "scratch the itch" for many people who would love to own a vintage perpetual calendar. I am on the list and can't wait to ...

The modern Pateks are exploring new designs and there will be very interesting things,

By: Mark in Paris : April 15th, 2017-05:32
even if we might understand them with a delay. This 5320G is indeed very successful from the first feedbacks we can read here. Thank you for sharing your opinion on this novetly Best, Mark

Great review

 By: watch-er : April 11th, 2017-13:47
I have not been able to gauge the popularity of the watch from the posts here and elsewhere. I like it and most likely will get one at some point. Bob

It is indeed a very different Patek

By: Mark in Paris : April 12th, 2017-14:15
thus I was quite surprised to see how positive people were about the watch. I think that it is an excellent model for other dial colours and decoration. Thank you Bob, I'm glad you enjoyed it Best, Mark

Yes, these lugs are beautiful,

By: Mark in Paris : April 13th, 2017-08:28
the way the steps are made, in a smooth way, I like them a lot. The case side is also very interesting and wasn't available in the recent collections. Sometimes, it is about a single very attractive detail... that's what I like a lot in Patek watches. Bes...

production

 By: dchaccour1 : June 18th, 2017-13:19
Patek are overproducing everything even the 6002 is being overproduced, the brand is no longer what it used to be give the 5320G couple of years and u'll see, another 5040, 5159, 5140 ... so many perpetual calendar references and each one produced in thou...

The overall production is higher

By: Mark in Paris : June 18th, 2017-13:53
but the demand has also increased very much during the last 20 years. So, which has grown faster, for which reference etc... I think that nobody outside from Patek headquarters know. Maybe you have a reliable insider source? Otherwise, I think it is only ...

Two Years Later

 By: baufoam : May 2nd, 2019-10:24
I am very intrigued by what you shared with us regarding your algorithm concerning Patek Philippe production numbers. Now that we have some 24 months of distance between us and the initial release of the model 5320G, what do you think? How many of those w...

thank you [nt]

great review

Thanks so much for the review. I am not a big Perpetual calendar fan but I really do like this watch. I love the hands, dial symmetry, and the shape of the bezel. Very attractive piece.
