From an early-mid 20 watch enthusiast

Dear all,
I have been mostly a lurker on this forum, one that religiously checks in everyday for new posts. I am indefinitely grateful for the exposure this forum has given me and taught me about all types of watches. From Bill for the vintage rolexes to amanico for jlc to foreversta for the independents. I think from a young collector's perspective, this forum stands out to be the single best resource available online where contents are not moderated by big name dealers or directly sponsored by brands. It is geniune, the contents varies, and the comments are visceral. I hope it stays that way for the next wave of growing watch lovers. And for that, I think, in my most humble opinion, we should not fall into the category of a 'die-hard' fan for any single brand, no matter how good. Afterall, every single brand is a capitalistic company that needs to generate revenues to survive, profits to grow and dividends/other forms of result to satisfy various shareholders. And part of that delves down to marketing. I think Patek's slogan is one of the smartest and longest-lasting marketing campaign in this industry, and I personally identify with it. And I also think Richard Mille's new instagram post is equally ingenious, having a smart dig at its rival, which I can identify with again, thanks to purchasers and the number of sealed, albeit desirable, Pateks out there for sale. It reminds me a little of Samsung's dig at Apple's screwup of Google Map, or its recent advertisement on long-time a\Apple consumers switching over. Frankly, Patek will probably scoff at RM's statement, but on the off chance that they dont, we, as clients could benefit from novel and/or better consumer products and experiences from Patek. In the mean time, we can argue until cows come home, but each brand's most loyal follower will fail to see its own shortfallings.
I have watches from both RM and Patek, and I will enjoy them regardless of what these companies say, how the market behaves, how many nouveau riche purchase them to display their wealth conspicuously, or even after the nasties things you can say to me here about either of these brands. As long as I smile to myself as I look down at my wrist, that alone is enough for me from this peculiar hobby of ours.
Just my two cents.
Best,
SY
