Hello Gordon, thank you for the pictures. I had the pleasure to visit the Patek Philippe boutique in Geneva in January this year. I saw and tried several watches, the 5196P, the Nautilus and this World Time. I remember clearly the sales person handing me ...

have not seen the rainbow moon until the mini GTG with Thomas M in Beijing where he took this photo !! I was in awe !! The lighting and angle must be perfect before the colors would appear. Cheers, Gordon

I have the answer

 By: ch9698 : April 19th, 2015-23:42
you have to in Beijing to have such colors. It's the pollution which create this rainbow So you have to choose: live with a black and white moon, or died with a color moon In fact, the new version of live and let died

Hi ch9698, a tough choice between...

Rainbow+Beijing pollution or no rainbow!! Health or watch happiness ?? Life is never easy !!

If you saw it..........

then, who am I to contradict you. Perhaps the atmosphere in Beijing is more Zen than in Geneva;) So, no need to ask Poirot then, the mystery is solved. You want a rainbow....Beijing is the place to go:) Cheers Francois

would like to see this in person

Diffraction/refraction of light...

...is probably at play here. After having seen your watch in the metal back in December, I responded to your December 16, 2014 post about your new 5575G saying that although the moon had gray colors, closer inspection revealed a luminescent quality, and a...

Let's propagate this until it turns into a myth!! 50 years from now, there will be entire blogs dedicated to the quest for the hidden PP seal :)

Good one! ;) [nt]

lol GLau I'm glad you were there to witness the shot! alwoo888 your answer

 By: ThomasM : April 24th, 2015-19:42
was great, the technical reasons are as I understand it too. of course understanding the opto-chromatic effects going on does help the photographer capture the effect when it happens... ...

Thanks alwoo888 for the explanation which...

 By: GLau : April 25th, 2015-12:38
is likely 100% correct with me comprehending only 50% of it because of my limited knowledge in physics and chemistry !! I would recommend to Thomas M to designate you as the resident physics & chemistry moderator for :-) Cheers Gordon

Thanks for your vote of confidence!

Unfortunately, I would have to turn it down even if such a thing existed - the level of technical expertise I've seen on this forum is intimidating! I'm happy just to read and learn :) And thanks, ThomasM for this one-of-a-kind picture! I'm curious as to ...

Unfortunately, no investigation here. Part speculation, part scraping the bottom of my memory of college physics from decades ago - would love to hear other 'theories'. The closest I could come to a detective would be Inspector Clouseau! (the bumbling sid...

I was lucky enough to be offered a 5575. With the advise of Gordon and others, I committed to the purchase. It was delivered last month. I noticed that if the watch is viewed at an angle, under bright light, the moon will briefly flash colors seen in the ...

Thanks, Gordon

I am very, very pleased with it. It is even more striking in the metal. Given the apparent demand for the 5575, if I had passed on it, I might never have had another opportunity to own one. Thank you for your wise counsel. Warren

It is not reflection. It has to be light refraction

By: COUNT DE MONET : May 22nd, 2015-03:22
Knowing that the moon and the stars are placed on their own glass discs the physical conditions for refraction of light are obviously given, It is like the famous Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" cover that you will know. Somehow, I am sure it is a coin...

I still think it is refraction

Diffraction does not result in coloured light. It has a much bigger impact and can change the nature of light from being a wave to being a particle. The mother of pearl explanation has more a point but judging on pictures to me it does not look like the w...
